Summons for CNRP an accident

A group of opposition lawmakers and officials who were briefly jailed after a violent protest in July were left confused yesterday when the Supreme Court incorrectly summonsed them to trial again.

Ket Khy, a lawyer for seven Cambodia National Rescue Party lawmakers and two other officials named in summonses, said the court’s deputy head prosecutor, Chhuon Chantha, had mistakenly ordered his clients back to court on January 19, thinking they were requesting bail.

The lawmakers and supporters were arrested after the July violence but soon released.

“[They] thought the appeal was for bail and to get back materials seized by police . . .Those not asking for [possessions] back do not need to attend now,” Khy said.

Phones, laptop computers and tablets were seized during the arrests, he added.

CNRP lawmaker Real Camerin said he remained confused as to a “hearing” mentioned in the summonses.

“This case is already over,” he said.
