Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court has let a suspected marijuana farmer walk free because of his advanced age.

Luck Phy, a spokesman for the provincial military police, said yesterday that authorities seized more than 4 kilograms of the drug after raiding a 71-year-old man’s farm in Banteay Meanchey on Friday night.

“After we received reports from our working group and some additional information from locals, the military police chief went down to the farm and destroyed the marijuana, seized more than 4 kilograms of dry marijuana and 68 marijuana trees,” Phy said.

The elderly farm owner, Hy Yun, was arrested in Poipet town soon after the raid.

Theam Pheakdey, anti-drug bureau chief for the Banteay Meanchey provincial military police, said yesterday that Yun was sent to court on Saturday, but was quickly allowed to go back home.

“The court officials did not charge him because he is too old,” Pheakdey said. “But he promised to the court and officials that he will stop planting marijuana. We let him go back home.”

Brit, 70, caught in drug bust
Mon, 12 January 2015

Police have arrested a 70-year-old British man in Sihanoukville on suspicion of possessing drugs.

According to provincial deputy prosecutor Hout Vichet, British national David Reader was arrested along with 34-year-old woman Lim Saron at the Powerhouse guest house on Saturday at about 9am.

During the raid, officers seized four packets of white powder, Vichet said. “We will test during the week to see whether they’re drugs.”

Photos of the pair, who are now being held at the provincial prison, were published online, showing them with officers around a table scattered with small packages and cigarette lighters.

In the pictures, Saron is shown in handcuffs and Reader is clad in a grey singlet and shorts in the pattern of an American flag.

Vichet said the pair would face court if tests prove the powder is an illicit substance.

The British Embassy did not respond to a request to confirm Reader’s nationality as of press time.
