BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police are still hunting for the gunman who fired shots into the air and a falling bullet injured a Vietnamese female tourist joining New Year's eve celebration at Central World Plaza.

Police have simulated the incident to find the direction of where the bullet was shot and believed it was fired from a distance of 1,200 metres away.

The injured tourist Lee Tui An has already returned home but advisor to the Royal Thai Police Commissioner Pol Gen Charumporn Suramanee promised to bring the gunman in the celebratory gunfire for trial.

From ballistic test, he said the 9 mm stray bullet fell 60 degrees and pierced into her head.

He said the bullet was fired at a 40 degrees angle and in the range of 1,200 metres.

She was hit by the bullet on the left side of the head as she was facing the show stage at the Central World Plaza.

He said investigators were sent to the suspected areas to find out if any celebratory gunfire was shot on the New Year’s eve.

Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Lt-Gen Pravut Thavornsiri alkso confirmed the shot was not fired from the New Year celebration site, but from nearby communities.

Investigation officers of Lumpini police station are now inspecting adjacent areas and asking people about celebrations on the night of new Year’s eve, he said and asked for cooperation from people who had information of celebratory shooting to report the police.

Jesus! That could have been anyone.

I don't know many places where you can bring a gun in front of a shopping mall like Central World on New Year's Eve and just fire off a gun in the air and not be taken down there and then.

err... This is Thailand!!! Mai pen rai, and all that. Mafia types. I could go on. wacko.png

Watching the morning news over the past few weeks this seems to have been a very common occurrence with bullets falling like rain from the skies over New Years. Everyday on the news there are different families pointing to holes in their roofs / car windscreens etc - one even woke up to find a bullet had fallen through her roof and had gone through the lid of her rice cooker.

One now infamous event that has been repeated on the morning news showed 6 - 8 teenagers at a New Years bash - each with an automatic pistol - firing off a barrage in unison and emptying each magazine - so dumb and drunk they filmed themselves doing it and ended up getting their collars felt by the BiBs - who made them apologies and confiscated their guns.

The one thing that is clear is that Thailand could certainly give the US a run for its money on gun ownership.

Poor Viet girl, just watched the ceremony and got a HEAD SHOT.

I guess she will send here as tourists all her friends, family members and acquaintances.

She hasn't died this means the "mai pen rai" effect is coming soon as usually.

Actually it says it was fired most likely 1,200 meters away (nearly a mile) so nowhere near the shopping center.

Growing up in the NY Metro area a long time ago, it was pretty common for people in the neighborhood to fire their guns on New Year's Eve Night and on the Fourth of July. My own Grandfather who always carried a .38 revolver on him, did the same thing, firing 6 shots from his revolver out of his bedroom window into the air. As far as I can remember, no one ever reported or any event made the news of someone being struck by anyone's stray bullet. My Grandfather did that every year into his 80's until my Dad went and took the .38 and a .22 rifle away from his Dad one particular Fourth of July. My Dad told my Grandfather that times had changed and my Grandfather would have to change with the times. His Dad was pi55ed at him but gave up his guns. I never knew what ever happened to the .38 revolver, but I eventually received the .22 rifle which was acquired in the Philippines during the 1930's. It is still with my family in the USA. Shooting a gun in the air for celebrating is a Dumb thing to do nowadays and just as dumb 50-60-70+ years ago. This Tourist was very lucky that the bullet had lost most of it speed and energy from traveling that great of a presumed distance.when it struck her on the top of her skull and not soft tissue such as an eyeball. She started off the New Year unlucky that She was struck, but lucky that She survived.

"This is a classic "no chance" case for police."

Actually, with microphones mounted on poles throughout the area, they can triangulate the source of the gunshot to a small area.

And with high powered cameras in satellites they can read the serial numbers on the guns used, come on TIT

The bullet fell at a 60 degree angle, struck the victim at a 40 degree angle and was fired from 1,200 meters HMMMMMM I was under the impression that angle of penetration was determined by first pushing an iron rod through the entry wound in the victim's skull. These numbers have me thoroughly confused, flummoxed, actually. Maybe someone can explain the numbers these wisened cops used to make this conclusion. The only way to find the gun owner is if the ballistics, assuming they do that sort of testing, are credible. They will probably never find the trigger man.
