PARIS (AP) — The French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo is publishing a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover of its first issue since Islamic extremists killed 12 people at its offices.

The newspaper Liberation hosted Charlie Hebdo staff as they prepared the new issue and is handling its special 1 million-copy print run in numerous languages.

Liberation published the Charlie Hebdo cover online late Monday night, showing a man in a white turban it says represents the prophet. He is holding a sign reading "Je suis Charlie" ("I am Charlie") and with a title reading "Tout est Pardonne") ("All is Forgiven"), which French media interpreted as meaning Muhammad is forgiving the cartoonists for lampooning him.

Charlie Hebdo's past caricatures of the Muslim prophet appear to have prompted last week's attacks, part of the worst terrorist rampage in France in decades.

Some witnesses reported that the attackers at the paper's offices shouted "We have avenged the prophet." Many Muslims believe all images of the prophet are blasphemous.

Earlier Monday, Charlie Hebdo lawyer Richard Malka told French radio that the new issue would "obviously" feature cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

A total of 17 people died in last week's attacks. Brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi and their friend, Amedy Coulibaly, were killed Friday by police after the murderous spree at Charlie Hebdo offices and a kosher supermarket. The three all claimed ties to Islamic extremists in the Middle East.

French police said Monday that as many as six members of a terrorist cell involved in the attacks may still be at large.

France saw its biggest demonstrations in history Sunday as millions turned out to show unity and defend freedom of expression.

Bravely defending freedom of speech by putting yourself on the line is, I suppose, admirable. But some of the people killed and their families, certainly those killed while shopping in the kosher grocery, may not have thought it a sacrifice they were willing to make

Of course the terrorists and nut jobs who staged the bombing and hostage-taking are 100% to blame for what they did, but if those who are publishing these cartoons (and let's face it, lampooning Mohammed is hardly a noble cause) know that innocent people are being put at risk, maybe exercising some restraint would be worth considering. The normal print run is 60 thousand ...but this edition will be 3 million and translated into 16 languages.

Religions are terrific for making people feel better about themselves and doing good works for others. But their practitioners overwhelmingly take themselves too seriously. Hence, such "crimes" as blasphemy, heresy, apostasy.

This politically-correct business means too many people on the burn ward, so afraid of offending someone, they can't make a joke, speak the truth or give a straight answer. (Yes, examples of religion are also women, gays, the rich, & fatsos.) To many sacred cows--and scared sheeple!

Nevertheless, satire must be equally applied. All religions should be fair game. IMO, even the Holocaust and other genocides, 911 (what happened to their frequent flyer miles?), mass murders, and unspeakable horrors should be fair game for satire.

However, all religious prophets teach self-restraint and nonviolence, including the lineage of the Abrahamic prophets including Mohammed. May peace be upon him and on the rest of the peoples America is bombing out of existence.

Free speech is understandably subject to limitation if it contravenes other laws, like inciting violence or causing public endangerment. It can't and shouldn't be curtailed because groups issue death threats to anyone making a statement that breaks no laws, but they don't like.

Free speech is not subject to limitation on the grounds that it is offensive, rude or that many people disagree with what is said. It does not exist to protect statements that must represent a "noble cause", and the implication that a noble cause is more deserving of being protected by the right to free speech than an ignoble one is completely missing the point.

Freedom of speech only exists to protect the rights of people to say what others hate to hear. You would not need to defend it otherwise.

The innocent people killed in the kosher grocery were not killed because of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, and there was no suggestion that they were. They were killed for being Jewish, and were part of a concerted attack on anyone held in contempt by these islamists (satirists, Jews, police). No-one has to do anything to be killed by islamic fundamentalists other than exist in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is not their "fault".

Your argument is directly saying threats of violence should overcome the right to free speech. This is not a tenable postion.

Some have managed to work out the increased circulation of the magazine due to the deaths 60K to 1M. Business is good!

Some photos show heads of EU States demonstrating 'unity' with France - yet each of the faces has contributed to Islamization of Europe! They march, but the dead ones can not.

Am I supposed to believe that because 4 M of French go on marching and 3 terrorists were killed by Police this will never happen again? Please, humor me not!

The events of modern islamic jihad have unfolded in such a way that this single issue defines exactly where (or not) we draw the line in regard to having our western cultural fabric dictated, irrespective of what is spoken or published. The concept of freedom of speech is actually built upon unpopular speech, nasty, filthy, mud slinging speech. If the limits of western freedoms are to be dictated by a radical ideology colored by religion then all hope is lost for civilization because there is no evidence anywhere in the history books where islam has given any quarter.

The hypocrisy of "in the name of islam" slaughtering jews, christians, atheists, and apostates around the world, burning churches, sacking temples, killing buddhists, raping children, acid attacking women, and murdering children stand in stark contrast to the admonishment not to depict their prophet in lampoon. The world is getting sick of this vile infection and its virulent transmission.

He is obsessed. Charlie Hebdo published tons of nasty cartoons about Jews and everybody else. They are easy to find on the Internet. Only radical Islam responded with violence.

Well done, I had Mohammad as my avatar for a couple of years after the Danish cartoon incident , ironically I had never taken that much of an interest in Islam until that point.

It would be nice if much of the press had the intestinal fortitude to publish this cartoon, but sadly I doubt it.
