Renewing motorcycle tax and insurance in Bangkok

Featured Replies

I'm sure this is a re-post, but searching hasn't turned up anything that useful.

My bike tax has expired, and the insurance certificate I have (in the previous owner's name) probably wants changing to mine (i.e. buying a new one). Could somebody advise me on where to do this and which documents I need? I have a green book in my name, I can take proof of ID too. Also which order should I do it in - I think I need proof of insurance in order to sort out the tax, so maybe I need to do that first?

Thanks for any advice.

So somebody said "Go to the DLT", and this is what happened...

Visited the place on Sukhumvit 99 (well, it's the second turning off Sukhumvit after 99, with the big blue archway and all the moto taxis hanging around), and was told that as my bike is more than 5 years old I needed to get it inspected. They directed me over to the place on Sukhumvit 62/1, who made quick work of checking the emissions, photocopying my insurance document and giving me the paperwork I needed, all for 60 THB.

Back to DLT, second floor, went to the information desk who checked the papers and gave me a queue number. Waited for 5 minutes until my number was called, went to the counter, gave in the paperwork and 101 THB and got my tax sticker.

Only documents I needed were the green book and the insurance certificate.

Hope this is useful to other people!
