NARATHIWAT — A teacher was injured by a roadside bombing this morning in the southern province of Narathiwat, where separatist insurgents have been waging a bloody campaign against Thai security forces for the past decade.

Police say the IED went off on a road in Baco district at around 8:30 am, while public school teacher Somjit Wongketchai and her bodyguards were passing through the area.

The blast reportedly damaged the vehicle that Somjit was riding in, and she was "slightly injured" by the explosion, medical workers at Bue Cho Hospital say.

Security officers believe the attack was launched by Islamic insurgents who have been battling Thai authorities in the southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani since 2004. The separatists aim to revive the independent sultanate of Pattani, which was incorporated into modern-day Thailand in the early 20th century.

DJJamie, here's real terrorism and terrorists for you, it's a shame you just can't remove the Rhetorical Political blinkers when all you believe is that the word terrorist and terrorism only applies to the hardliners of the UDD..

I wonder if the teacher who was targeted shares your narrow minded opinion!! ??

Not to worry though as the PM stated last year that the insurgency will be all over and sorted by 2015, he's got 11 months left, good luck with that, as his words will more than likely mirror GWB's "Mission Accomplished" statement about Iraq.

Really? An ordinary teacher has bodyguards?!?

Many of them do down there, well they go along with the hundreds of HK assault rifles the Junta sent down there late last year!! (that's sarcasm by the way )

Thailand has not addressed the Muslim terrorist issue with the resources to squash these radicals...that area of Thailand will remain unsafe for hardworking Thais and their families until it is dealt with properly...

May have to adopt a "scorched earth" program to root these thugs from their hiding places...make it too uncomfortable to live there...move back to Malaysia...

They never lived in Malaysia, so they can't 'go back there'.

Thailand should see if they can work out a deal with Malaysia and return the provinces they annexed from them. Problem solved.

I can't see any economic advantage in keeping it,and fighting it is useless and will never bring peace!

Thais control all the rubber tree farms important to Thai economy. The South is a Democrat stronghold from Thai rubber farmers backing the Democrat Party. Thai farmers backed the Prayuth Junta overthrow of the Yingluck government. The South supports illegal petrol importing and human trafficking.
