No American apples with deadly bacteria found in Bangkok

BANGKOK, 20 January 2015 (NNT) – The National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS) says no imported apples distributed by American companies are found contaminated in Thailand.

The ACFS has taken samples of American apples, especially the suspected Gala and Granny Smith varieties from stores in Bangkok and its vicinity. Results show no Bidart Bros apples have been imported into Thailand. The ACFS affirms that imported apples are usually tested for Listeria to assure safety for consumers before they are delivered to supermarkets.

Moreover, the ACFS has instructed Modern Trade Supermarket to examine its apple stock and immediately return them if any of them belong to Bidart Bros.

The action followed reports of bacteria outbreak in caramel apples distributed by Bidart Bros in the U.S. two weeks ago. The bacteria, known as Listeria, can cause life threatening illness.

The U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention claimed at least 7 people killed by Listeria. The bacteria were reportedly found at the company’s facility in California. America is recalling Granny Smith and Gala apples following the discovery.

the us warned against carmel apples from the bedat brothers facilities. how this lead to testing/suspecting all granny smith and gala apples in bangkok or thailand is confusing but probably par for the thai way we so often encounter/observe. then again it may be a news report mistake/misunderstanding.

it was reported 2 days back that the suspect apples were in customs and none had been released to the purchasers.

Does anyone actually trust a report by these people saying they tested all of them apples and they a good? Personally, I will wait to about a year before I eat another granny smith apple.

I do. I walked around the local market today and all the yankie apples had a bite taken out of them.

Oh Laud...7 Thais supposedly killed by US bad apples...their deaths will become a beacon for the good fellows who are Thai attorneys...let the lying begin...will be settled out-of-court...the lawyers will buy more condos in the US and Thailand...while the families will be told they should settle for what is left over after the lawyers have siphoned off the lions-share...

Incidentally, once lawyers have learned how to correctly and legally steal from the public...they often run for public office where they can really make a difference in their personal income...

Was at Makro day before yesterday, and Washington Apples had a kiosk set up in produce area, staffed by a very bored young lady playing on her mobile phone, next to some apple slices on a plate, turning brown from air exposure. A father with a 4 y/o girl in a trolley, helped themselves to free samples but didn't buy any apples.

There were signs on all apple display shelves, saying all was safe, no plob lum.

Despite the free samples and assurances from the Thai Gov, I gave the apples a miss this time.
