Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies at 90

Flags are flying at half mast from UK government buildings. While they're lowered I wonder why they don't just paint an f'ing star and crescent on them.

Tens of Billions of pounds and thousands of jobs come from Saudi Arabia. Who cares if they show an insignificant little bit of respect to keep them sweet?

Honestly, some people will whinge about anything.

Condolences to the family of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. ......................Temper your sadness with the thought,

That it's not so much about losing a loved one, as gaining a spare tea towel........................................coffee1.gif

What would the Saudi nation would be without it's oil? probably a stone age, tribal

autocrat country where women are third class and religion is foremost in everyday

life, the Saudis themselves would be just another camel herding people if it wasn't for the

oil...

What would be the US without the Saudi oil ? United States around Alamo ?

The US would be fine without Saudi oil. How would the rest of the world be without it?

The King was like the Pope.

Another old man who tip-toed through the landmines of his restrictive heritage and mean-spirited religious cult. He appeared to do some good things, but instead just bumbled along, between times of servicing his two dozen wives and others, behind the scenes. The King and the Pope, two men encrusted with riches, just going through the motions expected of them, but devoid of any innovative ideas which could help little people (lower social rungs) in any meaningful ways.

Remember the oil crisis in early 70's when they cut off 25% of their production for embargo against countries who helped Israel during Yum Kippor war...

King Abdullah's accomplishments were considerably more than you are giving him credit for.

He started easing some restrictions on women in politics, safely led his country through Obama's Arab Spring, has helped put an end to local terrorist attacks and has founded the first and only co-ed university in the Kingdom.

He did a good job for the Kingdom.

You mean what happened under another monarch some 40 years ago?

This thread is about the death of somebody that ruled in this century.

I think (know) I'd chose the king's lot over that of the Pope.

Where I was living this had no affect on me, but this isn't the 70's and the oil situation is considerably different.

The ultimate harm that was done by the oil embargo, was done to the Saudi's themselves and they learned a very valuable lesson. The US in particular, but many other countries, were extremely wasteful with oil. Conservation became key and there was a drastic drop in oil usage. It took a very, very long time for the Saudi's to recover from this new emphasis on conservation.

At this point the US would not suffer without Saudi Oil. The rest of the world, however, might and that in turn would have an effect on the US.
