Yes, I'm well aware of the nationalist fervour now making the rounds in Canada. Canadians can act tough all they want, can have a big mouth until hell freezes over, but unfortunately that's not going to help them in any way. Prior to Operation Barbarossa close to 70% of Germans supported Hitler invading Russia, but popular approval is a poor measure of the rightness of any particular course, as history has shown. Fact is Canada will now again enter into recession. It was already skirting close to that abyss and will now fall head on into the recession hole. There will be mass layoffs in Canadian manufacturing. Billions will be shaved off Canada's GDP, and the Canadian economy will contract severely. Plummeting export revenues undermine the Canadian dollar, driving up import costs and consumer prices. Persistent trade friction incentivizes companies to relocate factories and operations directly to the United States to bypass border taxes. Provinces heavily reliant on U.S. trade, such as Ontario (auto/steel) and British Columbia (wood/paper), face disproportionate economic devastation. Canada’s commitment to match tariffs dollar-for-dollar on U.S. goods risks escalating a prolonged trade war that further hikes domestic consumer costs. The total breakdown in negotiations effectively shatters the framework of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, ending decades of predictable, near-zero-tariff integration. What Carney has negotiated for Canada is an unmitigated disaster for Canada's economy and most Canadians. As time will show.
