Americans in Thailand, how do you feel?

They aren't in Thailand, Jake. There are four times as many Americans in the world as there are Brits and Aussies combined. Are there four times as many American expats in Thailand as there are Aussies and Brits? Of course not.

Haven't noticed anything different in my interactions with Thais.

Yet I do feel an increase in hostility, mostly from those Brits and Aussies who disliked us in the first place.

There is another thread where a non-American mentioned how many expats were losers in their own countries.

The UK and Aus. are tiny with combined populations about 1/4 of the US. Yet they are vastly overrepresented as expats in Thailand. That's because they hate themselves and their countries. As bitter old men they are jealous and have to be bitter toward others.

In 30 years their countries will be muslim due to immigration and breeding rates. They know it. They are powerless to do anything about it because their governments disarmed them.

They actually hate their countries and it shows in a multitude of posts. They have nowhere to go home to. They don't recognize their countries due to immigration and PC governments.

They've given up their sovereign borders to an international group and they no longer can claim patriotic pride. All they can do is criticise those who have an independent country with patriotism and who do have the power to change things. They criticize America AND their own countries. They are lost and broken.

They no longer understand being patriotic and think that those who are have lost the plot when in truth they have lost the plot and have lost their way. They are people without a country. They drink their days away in Thailand realizing that the old saying is true: "Wherever you go, there you are."

NeverSure, I think most of what you say is a wee bit brutal and if anyone sounds bitter in parts, it`s you. But the parts of your post I have highlighted you are spot on, sad to say.

True, especially regarding Britain, where the heritage has been eroded over the years, I doubt that many Brits these days can feel patriotic. Strange actually, because in Thailand I am proud to be classified as a farang. I am perceived as a white European and it`s not considered a taboo subject describing myself as a white European whereas in my home country being proud of who and what I am is discouraged. I think that if I had to return to my country it would prove a huge reverse culture shock for me, I very much doubt that I would be able to fit in there now.

I am still patriotic, but prefer to be a patriot from afar, just left with fond memories of how my homeland used to be back in the old days. So yes, you are absolutely right.

Beetlejuice, I'm not "bitter." I get angry at the incessant criticism of the US on this forum, and the criticism of Americans. It goes on so much that I get truly angry just as anyone would who is incessantly criticised.

Brits and Aussies on here go on and on about how "unliked" Americans are, apparently not realizing that what they are saying and how they say it makes them the most unlikeable of all. They are themselves hateful.

They are bitter old men who must not realize how xenophobic they actually are.

Agree, on a day to day basis I se far fewer Americans in Thailand than I do Britts, Germans, Australians and others and as NeverSure states, there are far more Americans in the world.

I feel this is due mostly to the fact that Europe and Australia are much closer.

A 20 + hour flight from California is a killer and most Americans are large and very uncomfortable sitting on a plane that long....I am.

and many from the USA need to travel to California before getting on a flight to Thailand.

As to why are we here..... Unlike some countries, Americans are free to travel almost anywhere in the world with few restrictions. We seem to have the financial stability to do so as well.

Personally, I am here to be with my family, most of who are Thai.

And as for the '$$$" as some have commented....The USD is doing pretty well now..from what I read on TV much better than the Ausie, Britt or Euro currency.

A lot of expats have moved to Thailand and rarely go "home". I go for months at a time and don't mind the flight, or at least don't let it stop me.

The U.S. has been Thailand's biggest ally and benefactor for nearly a 100 years. That's why U.S. citizens are treated better here, e.g., can own their own businesses.

Could be true, but that statement is more or less saying; that all ex-pats living here were/are losers in their own countries and in Thailand. Obviously those who make these statements don`t consider themselves in that category. I had my own reasons for retiring to Thailand, that was only made possible because I was to a degree successful in my own country, which provided me with substantial savings and pensions to support my family and I in Thailand for the rest of my life. So in my opinion and although blowing my own trumpet, I wouldn`t describe that as being a loser anywhere and there are many living here now who are in the same or in better situations than me.

As for the criticisms of the United States, I think over the years everyone has come under condemnation here on Thai visa, including the Thai bashers, those I consider are the real losers, sad people who have to struggle and hustle in life that blame everyone else for their problems, the angry, the bitter, the twisted and the long and suffering , yes, the losers. And to those I give the two fingered salute, not even worthy of an intelligent response.

As for putting the world to rights, I have made my own little world here and most of it I just let wash over my head. If certain people don`t like me for who I am and what I am, I don`t give a toss because that`s their problem not mine.

All my American friends had received emergency notices, from the U.S.A. embassy, to leave Indonesia as soon as possible.

The ones who decided to stay doubled their security staff and had written "pribumi" in front of their Kemang mansions ; before moving temporarily to Bali where life was peaceful as usual.

Being a Belgian myself, I called my embassy to ask what's going on and what to do?!?

An Indonesian clerk answered me that he does not know because all the consular staff where already in Singapore...

So, I moved to Bali as well where I spent the best Christmas and New Year's partties ever...

Most Thais hold America in high regard, even though America's criticism of the military coup was seen in some quarters as unwelcome foreign meddling in Thailand's internal affairs.

Even so, Thais are worldly and intelligent enough to realize that an individual doesn't always support or subscribe to the policies of their government. They also seem to understand that America is a very multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-racial society, and that the idea of a "prototypical American" is largely an outmoded and archaic concept.

I just wish that all of my TVF expatriate brethren shared this same worldliness and open-mindedness.

I can't say I have ever felt as it I were treated any better or worse than any other falang. Sometimes I think some Thais feel a little better about Americans, but not enough to make a difference in daily life.

Anything good or bad towards us is really coming from the government. Yes, right now I think the government is very unhappy with the US, but I don't think that would translate into taking anything out on US citizens.

What I do feel since I've lived in this country is a lot of hatred from other Western countries against the US and this has...opened my eyes to say the least. This has all been perceived from the comments of many crude and self-important posters on TV who show their own tremendous faults simply by the posts they make. I just try to remind myself that most of these people are narrow minded with limited perspective and education due to their below average IQ's. It's patently obvious by their comments and their willingness to blurt these comments out to the world.
