Pattaya Monk accused of sexually assaulting 10 year old step-daughter



PATTAYA: -- Banglamung Police arrested a 52 year old man who had been removed from the monkhood so he could face charges of sexually assaulting his 10 year old step-daughter over the period of 3 months.

Police were made aware of the allegations in October 2014 after the mother of the victim reported the allegations to the Police who attempted to track-down the suspect without success, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Pattaya Provincial Court.

How does a monk get a stepdaughter in the first place?

Monks are not excused from life. The monk that I respect most is ninety-six years of age, he entered the monkhood full time at forty-four. Prior to that he was married and had a family - his adult daughter runs the kitchen at the temple he founded.

He built this temple from scratch, a temple that he founded at the age of eighty-two. It was nothing but a jungle cave before, now it has accommodation blocks for male and female, and feeds sixty people per day. Here's a strange thing - he only allows one monk at a time to live in the temple, along with two novices. The monk that he allows to live in the temple must participate in all activities, and after six months he is expelled. The novices, who are late teens, are expelled after a year.

Why? - he says life is not about comfort and regime. It is the job of a monk to reach out and assist - not to sit back taking plaudits from people. If you are not building something for the community then you better be helping the community. This man still goes on the road disposing charity three months every year, even at this advanced age. He supplies blankets, medicines and learning materials to the impoverished.

Monks like him look upon many other so-called monks with disdain. So called because a lot of these guys are in love with the money and prestige that goes with being a monk. A monk with a full bank account is an aberration - a monk with personal possessions is also an aberration. A monk wandering about the place with iPhones and mac computers is an aberration. The value of said items should be used to improve the lives of the poor.

This does not mean that the Temple cannot own a video camera, laptop etc - as long as it's used to promote the teachings of Buddha. In this modern age some temples have podcasts where the worldwide Buddhist diaspora will listen in, and sometimes ask questions of senior monks. I have attended a session such as that in the past. If technology is used to promote Buddhism it's welcome - if it's use, as I have seen, to catch up with X-Factor it's not.

There is a fundamental problem at the heart of the Thai monkhood. Too many men use it as an escape hatch - coming and going as they please. I know of one case where two drug-addicts had a baby, the women eventually committed suicide by drinking bleach, and the guy ran off to the temple. What about the baby? he abandoned it - and when he came out of the temple he moved away without seeing the child.

In his mind he will have done a good thing by entering the temple - the monks within the temple will have assisted him and tried to get him through his drug addiction - that's part of the calling, to help those that need help. here's the problem - while his initial abandonment could have been condoned, the fact that he left the temple and ignored the child showed him up for being a rat that had no interest in his own obligations.

Okay, this is the Pattaya thread - how about bar girls that enter the temple? Broadly the monks have two attitudes to them - one is that it is their life and the monks cannot control or judge them. The monks know hope that they see the error of their ways, but cannot force them to do so. The second attitude is that "we only see people when they are in a time of crisis." That applies to everyone, not just bar girls.

In the case of bar girls - the monks know that they may stay in the temple for a few weeks even, play the part of the virtuous - and within a day of leaving being on their backs in Pattaya again. In the minds of the bar girls they will have done a good thing - and the other girls will actually be jealous of them. Then half an hour later they will be in a threesome with a ladyboy and a random guy - and if the monks knew - they would just shrug. A few months or possibly years later she'll reappear in the temple - go through the same farce - and regard herself as having washed away her previous sins.

It's a bit like Catholics doing confession.

But RT555 spoke of Thainess -

What he is referring to is the Thai ability to wash away responsibility. I'm prepared to lay you short odds that the guy in the OP actually believed that going into the monk hood would have given hi some protection from the sexual abuse charges. He may have believed that the police would not have arrested him in the temple - or that in some way a cloak of protection sent direct from Buddha would have washed over him.

So what is Thainess? - it's not easily defined, but for the purpose of this thread there are three issues that have to be pointed out. The first one, that defeats every single westerner at first, and some forever is -

There is no tomorrow.

That's why you'll see, hear, witness and possibly even suffer from absurd situations - where you cannot fathom the thinking behind your Thai gf's or partners actions. We westerners like to play long games - Thais play the game now - because tomorrow? maybe they are dead already.

If you don't understand that part of Thainess you will never start to understand this country.

For the second part of Thainess - lets go back to the ninety-six year old monk. I was in conversation with him and I inquired about the concept of a Buddha figure for every day.

"There's only one Buddha," he spat.

"So why do people talk about Saturday Buddha, for example?"

"Superstition - the people in this country are stupid. They will believe any superstition. Their love for superstition is stronger than their love for Buddha."

That's why they will spend a month in the temple, then go out and see a fortune teller - and go talk to a spiritualist about possibly buying a house or business. The spiritualist will turn up, tell them if the angel of the land agrees with their plan, and a decision is made based upon what the angel says. I'm serious - I've seen it.

And the third issue? - when all else fails just go to the temple for absolution. Have you ever tried to have a conversation with a Thai woman about something she did wrong in the past?

"farang think too much."

That's code for - "I am absolved - eff you."

So no tomorrow, superstition and in their minds guaranteed absolution - three very important elements of Thainess. The most important one in my opinion, though - and by a country mile is -

There is no tomorrow.

He is still married to that lady and they stayed together for 2 yrs before he enter monk hood.

The complain was filed in Oct. So that means there is a possibility that he enter monk hood during that time and not committ the allegations while he was still a monk

I presume he married the child's mother... that was before he became a monk.

As I read it he disappeared last October, when he knew the wife (ex-wife) was going to shop him, found some far away temple to to hide by becoming a monk until the heat died down.
