ghworker2010 Posted February 13, 2015 Share Posted February 13, 2015 I recently had a new 'carryboy' bull bar installed on my isuzu. Most of the shops where I live only sold the bull bars which included the black plastic in the middle. I didnt want that and ordered one from a brochure via a local car fixing shop. When the installed it I pressed against it and it was loose i.e it was possible to push it inwards towards the car a few mil. They ended up fixing a small thin steel bar in the middle of the nudge bar which they screwed to car near the engine. It doesnt move as much anymore - only a little bit. Is it supposed to move at all???? Finally, can you take a look at the photos below. I dont like the 2 square bits on top of the nudge bar as it looks shit in my opinion. Is it possible to pay a steel fabrication guy to cut that off and smooth it off for me? many thanks Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Pomthai Posted February 13, 2015 Share Posted February 13, 2015 A shop familiar with 316 stainless steel and tig welding (preferably with experience in the boat / marine industry) would be able to cut off the tangs, grind the area flat and polish back to a shine. transam Posted February 13, 2015 Share Posted February 13, 2015 If that thing is chromed then don't cut off the spot light lugs as the chrome will be removed and it will peel/lift after a period, chrome must be a continuous plating. I dented my rear bumper........... ...........Went to my local spares shop to replace it...........He said............Chrome or stainless..................I was surprised that they had a S/S bumper.... Stainless steel is widely used in Thailand, I see gates and railings everywhere made from it, I also see either zero or very little rust in gates that have been installed for years. My goodness, take a drive down Sukhumvit road (Pattaya), there's many auto shops that specialise in bullbars, mufflers, exhaust systems etc, all in stainless steel. I don't suggest that the quality of the stainless steel is on a level of that used in surgical instruments, but it seems to handle the Thai environment without rusting out. tonytigerbkk Posted February 14, 2015 Share Posted February 14, 2015 Both types of bull bars (stainless & Chrome) are available in Thailand. I have been to PIAK's factory and can confirm that they use stainless, whereas KSC use both stainless and chrome but their chrome is double dipped. Most of the smaller manufacturers and those that make copy products use chrome but with a single dip. If you have stainless products here that rust it is most likely that the stainless is of a very low quality, as T304 stainless is very expensive in Thailand. As for the Carryboy product, their bull bars are made by an outside company, so it is not really a Carryboy product. In fact, apart from the fiberglass shells that they use for the canopies and tonneau covers, all of their products are made by other companies. I don't know if they use stainless on their bars but if they advertise that the bars are stainless then I would believe that. Usually a bull bar is the big bumper (black powdercoated) with a winch provision but some people would call an A-Bar or nudge bar a bull bar. The name was adopted as a generic term for steel alloys with a minimum of 10.5% chromium. The chromium gives the steel its 'stainless' properties - essentially corrosion resistance. On the surface of the metal, a very thin chromium-rich oxide layer is formed which is inert - i.e. it prevents the steel from rusting. The advantage of stainless steels over plated steels is that, if scratched or damaged, the steel will 'self-repair' as a new oxide layer is formed. In plated steels, scratches in the plate will often lead to corrosion of the steel underneath. In general, the higher the proportion of chromium, the stronger the corrosion resistance of the steel. In addition to chromium, other metals are added to give the steel particular properties such as strength and malleability. Specifically nickel is used to strengthen the oxide layer. As for whether they are magnetic, the answer is that it depends. There are several families of stainless steels with different physical properties. A basic stainless steel has a 'ferritic' structure and is magnetic. These are formed from the addition of chromium and can be hardened through the addition of carbon (making them 'martensitic') and are often used in cutlery. However, the most common stainless steels are 'austenitic' - these have a higher chromium content and nickel is also added. It is the nickel which modifies the physical structure of the steel and makes it non-magnetic. They are not welded correctly and they never use bolts the right size to hold the bar on to the chasse or use spring loaded washers to suit. 9 times out of 10, in an a small collision with what ever, they will fold back and damage your bonnet, grill and surrounding chrome bits and pieces. In a fairly hard prang/accident, because these bars are not manufactured to the vehicle specifications, they do not allow the air bags to deploy in the accident. If you know what to look for, if proper stainless the weld will look raw and not coated, if coated it is the cheap crap they call stainless here. See the welded joint between the bar and bracket. It is stainless steel most likely Tig welded. It is more than likely the lower grade 304 as opposed to the better marine grade 316L. However, it in NOT tin or anything else coated. If it was anything else like mild steel it would have been stick (arc) welded which results in usually much wider weld seams.
