Bangkok in new road safety initiative

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok is one of 10 cities selected for Bloomberg Philanthropies' Global Road Safety Initiative, which aims to reduce fatalities and injuries from road traffic crashes.

With a new commitment of US$125 million over five years, the programme will work at both the national level to strengthen road safety legislation and the city level implementing proven road safety interventions.

Twenty invited cities participated in the competition with ten cities and five countries selected as official participants in the program. The five countries selected to receive technical support to reviewand strengthen road safety legislation include China, India, Philippines, Thailand and Tanzania.

The ten cities are:

1. Accra, Ghana;

2. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia;

3. Bandung, Indonesia;

4. Bangkok, Thailand;

5. Bogota, Colombia;

6. Fortaleza, Brazil;

7. Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam;

8. Mumbai, India;

9. Sao Paulo, Brazil; and

10. Shanghai, China.

I'm sure the money will be well-used in Thailand. It will be used to buy the best accident prevention devices known to the Thais - - amulets, both authentic and fake(?). whistling.gif

That is not enough money for just one city not to mention 10. Espcially here in Thailand where the AVERAGE driver has NO idea what HE or SHE is doing.

I am not one usually to be cynical, but ... shouldn't a city be able to cure it's own traffic ills?

Mind you, some BMA people will love this influx of pocket money.

After reading today's news I'm convinced there is a secret "Agency for development of stupid ideas" here

They already spent millions $$$ on a computerized traffic management system but the cops are still sitting at their booths watching TV, eating noodles and managing the traffic lights.

Seems to me the Thais have a very good roadway system outside of the small soi's and, due to the reality of slower mph due to the density, less accidents than I see every day in Miami and fort Lauderdale.

Exit out the motorcycle accidents and Thailand no worse than LA

Its not secret, its called the unelected government

If you 'exit out' motorcycle accidents? How do you propose they do that? "oh, you died on a motorcycle so you don't count in the statistics" Too many car drivers think like that already! Why not 'exit out' the car accidents too, then the figures would be the best in the world!

I still see loads of motorcycles driving against traffic without a helmet. That's how they think about the Thai traffic police and safety of other people.

Sure the General also sees this happening.whistling.gif

Thailand's road system - even the latest motorways are dreadful. No safety in their design and poor construction.

There are already various organisations involved in improving road safety in Thailand. They are national, ASEAN, international, private and charities, but successive governments prefer to rely on their own prejudices and ignorance about road safety rather than listen to sound scientific advice.

As the authorities have decided to ignore advice for such a long time whilst concurrently developing one of the world's largest motor industries, rapidly expanding vehicle ownership and a hugely dangerous road system, it is inevitable that road casualties will sky-rocket. Furthermore the solutions have become moee and more complicated and therefore costly as time passes.

at some point someone will have to grasp the nettle as the cost of road injury and death is already taking its toll on the national economy.

As ever this thread will fill up with pointless examples of what TV members consider to be bad driving and therefore submitted as a simple or "catch-all' solution to the problem. all this really indicates is that extreme ignorance of the issues surrounding road safety is not just restricted to the Thai people and their rulers. In fact they are worse as they are mostly based on theories based on race....the ultimate stupidity.
