BANGKOK, Feb 17 --- The Royal Thai Police Office is deploying 1,400 rapid response teams to secure public safety during Chinese New Year celebrations nationwide.

Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Ruengsak Jarit-ek said the agency is ready to ensure security during the Chinese New Year festival and its personnel are mobilised to protect tourists and the general public.

He said Chinese New Year celebrations were organized at 12 main locations including the Yaowarat area in Bangkok, Nakhon Sawan, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Chon Buri and Phuket.

The 1,400 rapid movement units together with over 300,000 volunteers have been put on standby to prevent untoward incidents nationwide.

Pol Gen Ruangsak also asked people to take precautions while lighting joss sticks to worship spirits during the Chinese New Year period to prevent fire. Those who cause fires are liable to seven years in jail and a fine of at least Bt14,000, he said.

This morning the deputy national police chief inspected security measures and public services in the Yaowarat area. (MCOT online news)
