BANGKOK: -- Five police officers of Sawankalok police station in Sukhothai province were transferred and faced disciplinary action after soldiers raided a house and arrested nine people they said operating underground lottery business in the district.

The immediate transfer was ordered by Sukhothai provincial police commander Pol Maj Gen Rangsan Kojjakrai after soldiers from the Phitsanulok-based Army Area arrested nine people and seized a large number of underground lottery tickets and equipment, along with 300,000 baht in cash at a house on Jodvithisong road in Sawankalok town.

Transferred to the Sukhothai police command headquarters pending investigation in 15 fays included the station police chief Pol Col Pitarn Kwanmuang, suppression inspector Pol Lt Col Pasant Sangthong, and investigation inspector Pol Lt Col Somsak Kiewon.

They will face negligence of duties for allowing the illegal lottery business to operate in their responsible areas.

All the nine lottery operating suspects were later freed each on a 10,000 baht bail.

Psst, there's one on Samui too.

These underground lotteries are EVERYWHERE. So why was the Sawankalok police station in Sukhothai singled out?

And why were the officers transfered, and not fired and arrested?

Really? The only police I have heard of being fired and arrested in Thailand, in the last 5 years, were some who failed to cut their boss in on their bribe money. 99% get transferred to another station (if caught). They can be convicted of murder and get out on bail...indefinitely. Last year there was a cop out on bail for murder, when he killed again. Greatest job in the country for the 99%? Police.

"pending investigation in 15 days"

They need proof before they can be fired, well possibly not where you came from.

Indeed surprising!! Illegal lottery?? The whole nation is full of illegal lottery vendors and not much news of illegal lottery get caught. Illegal lottery even sell openly at shophouse. People just buy from the shop, nothing happen to the seller.

10,000 Baht each for bail, so they had plenty of change out of the 300,000 then !

Another day another transfer. The public have been sated, the cops disciplined. Case closed. Justice served....
