BANGKOK: -- Army chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr today declined comment after the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) has finalized the charter draft that says senators will be indirectly elected from pools of candidates nominated by ex-politicians, the National People's Assembly and other groups.

Gen Udomdej said briefly that he had no information to comment pending views from relevant people.

Under the draft, there will be 200 senators serving six-year terms.

Senators will be selected from among five categories of people: former prime ministers, former Supreme Court presidents and former parliament presidents; former high-ranking state officials such as military leaders and permanent secretaries; heads of legally registered professional organisations; people’s organisations such as labour unions, agricultural co-operatives and academics; and other groups such as lawyers, environmental activists, poverty networks and healthcare experts.

"indirectly elected"

I see that ThaiPBS, "The Broadcaster you can trust", has been very very quick to pick up the new vocabulary/junta-reality with which the generals want to replace such un-flattering terms as "unelected".

I shouldn't be laughing so hard because it is a sad time for Thailand, but these guys are real cut-ups...

Senator selection and appointments fairly much a lock on an elected government for the elite class. This is not like Canada or UK governments.

No surprises here and almost a certainty there will be no REFERENDUM on the constitution.

Maybe a NIDA or TRICHA poll of 1,500 people showing 90% favor the new constitution.

The NCPO has made an honest and sincere effort to destroy Thai sovereignty and it should be respected for that!

You still don't make much sense even with your name spelled backwards.

This is not like Canada or UK governments, it's not even like Brazilian or the Netherlands governments. So what?

As for the NCPO trying to destroy Thai sovereignty, did you look up the meaning of the word?

": unlimited power over a country

: a country's independent authority and the right to govern itself"
