Economy Political Jitters and Falling Numbers Shake Thailand’s Tourism Recovery
Picture courtesy of Today Online Thailand's tourism sector is reeling as foreign visitor numbers slide. From January 1 to June 22, there was a 4.24% drop in arrivals compared to the same time last year, revealed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Only 16.04 million foreign tourists visited in this period, sparking concern among industry experts. Malaysia leads as the top source of visitors with 2.19 million arrivals, followed closely by China at 2.17 million. Despite these figures, the aftershocks of the pandemic are evident. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revised its forecast, now predicting 37 million foreign tourists this year, falling short of the nearly 40 million record set in 2019. The political climate adds another layer of complexity. Concerns over potential instability surged following a leaked conversation between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia’s former prime minister, Hun Sen, concerning border tensions. The fear of a coup has worried the tourism industry, which is seeking assurance against political turmoil. The prospect of a coup is alarming for operators, as it would deepen the uncertainty overshadowing a fragile recovery. “A coup would be disastrous for our sector,” one local operator warned, emphasising the need for a stable democratic system. As Thailand attempts to revitalise its tourism industry post-pandemic, it faces the dual challenge of overcoming both economic hurdles and political uncertainties. The industry remains hopeful for stability, which is crucial for recovery in both tourism and the broader economy. Adapted by ASEAN Now from [source] 2025-06-25 -

Crime Finnish Fugitive Wanted for Murder & Drug Trafficking Captured in Hua Hin
Picture courtesy of Matichon. A Finnish national wanted by INTERPOL for serious crimes including murder and large-scale drug trafficking has been apprehended, following a covert operation by immigration police. On the afternoon of 24 June, at approximately 13:30, Police Major General Chairit Anurith, Commander of Immigration Division 3, led a special operation to arrest Mr. Daniel Reijo Karvonen, a 42-year-old fugitive subject to a Red Notice issued by INTERPOL. Karvonen is wanted by Norwegian authorities in connection with three major criminal cases, including a brutal murder and international narcotics trafficking. Acting on intelligence gathered over a sustained surveillance campaign, police identified Karvonen’s residence in a condominium complex in Hua Hin. Officers disguised themselves as fitness trainers and mingled with other gym users to confirm his identity. Once his presence was verified, they moved in and detained him without incident. Investigations revealed that Karvonen had fled to Thailand after being implicated in the November 2024 murder of a man in Kongsvinger, Norway. Further charges allege that Karvonen was manufacturing and distributing illegal narcotics in the same region and was a key figure in a transnational smuggling operation that transported drugs in vehicles across the Swedish-Norwegian border. Police Major General Chairit described Karvonen as a “dangerous criminal” and noted that the Norwegian authorities have been seeking his extradition for some time. He added that the operation followed directives from Thailand’s national police chief and is part of a wider government initiative to eliminate transnational crime and prevent foreign fugitives from using Thailand as a safe haven. “This arrest is a clear signal that Thailand will not tolerate foreign criminals who threaten the peace and security of our society,” said Chairit. “We are committed to upholding the law and safeguarding the country’s image and stability.” Mr. Karvonen is currently in police custody pending extradition proceedings.
