Proposed political ban for the 'five political rivers' strongly opposed

BANGKOK: -- Key members of the National Legislative Assembly and the National Reform Council have voiced their protest against a proposal of a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee that members of the “five political rivers” will be barred from politics for two years after they leave the offices.

The two-year banishment from politics was proposed by Dr Jate Dhonavanik, a member of the CDC, who reasoned that the political banishment was intended to prevent members of the “five political rivers” from entering politics because they were directly involved with the new Constitution.

The five political rivers are the National Council for Peace and Order, the cabinet, the National Legislative Assembly, the National Reform Council and the Constitution Drafting Committee.

NLA vice president Peerasak Porchit said that it was unfair to banish members of the NLA from politics for two years because they were not directly involved in the crafting of the new charter and their job at the NLA was temporary.

He said had he known from the start of such restriction he would not have joined the NLA in the first place.

He also voiced his objection to the CDC’s proposal that all the senators in the future should be indirectly elected.

NRC member Paibul Nititawan admitted he was unaware of such restriction. But that is true, he said it was not right because all except the CDC were not directly involved in the drafting of the charter.

He believes that Dr Jate’s proposal will definitely be dumped.

Sounds as if the members from the five political rivers don't read Thaivisa, because I recall that that restriction was brought up before the drafting of the constitution even started.

It's a brilliant suggestion. It would mean the current members of the NLA and NRC might be more prone to proposing unbiased fair laws, because they could not reap any personal gain from any of the laws they enact or propose...at least for 2 years.

Brilliant.

Maybe I'm just picky, but can we please have captions with any pictures used on the Forum. Is the guy pictured above a key member of the "five rivers" community or what? Be useful to know.

The Interim Constitution states that there will be a Constitutional Drafting Commission, comprising 36 members, appointed by the President of the National Reform Council. These members will be nominated by NCPO, the National Reform Council, the National Legislative Assembly, and the Cabinet.

Members of the Constitutional Drafting Commission must not hold political office positions within two years after they are discharged from the membership of the Commission.

Members of the five political riverts "don't read" (especially history).

They only write.... for others to read.

So by that, only members of the CDC would not be allowed to hold political office.

After reading the story of the Vice-Admiral, his wife and daughter, one does not need a lot of imagination to see why they are objecting.
