BANGKOK: -- The widow of the late Muslim human rights lawyer Somchai Nilapaichit has demanded a replacement of the police team investigating the lawyer’s enforced disappearance claiming that the team has failed to make any progress about the case.

The demand of Mrs Angkhana Nilapaichit was contained in a letter submitted today to the chief of the Department of Special Investigation Mrs Suwana Suwanchutha.

The team, headed by Pol Col Nirand Adulyasak, commander of special criminal cases office, has not made any progress since it carried out the investigation ten years ago, said Mrs Angkhana.

Tomorrow marks the 11th anniversary of the enforced disappearance of Mr Somchai, she said, adding that she felt the team was not serious enough about the investigation.

She went on saying that she was told the DSI had stopped discussing the case many years ago and, worse, some of the witnesses were intimidated and a defendant, Pol Lt-Col Ngern Thongsuk, went missing without any traces.

As a damaged party, Mrs Angkhana insisted that she had the right to demand the replacement of the probe team because she did not trust the team.

BANGKOK: -- ANGKHANA NEELAPAIJIT, the wife of missing lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit, yesterday called on the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to change the team of investigators charged with looking into her husband's disappearance as there has been no progress in 11 years.

Colonel Niran Adulyasak is leading the team of investigators in question.

In her petition, she said the team has been studying the case for 11 years now, but so far there has been no progress. Also, she pointed out, the DSI has not called a meeting in relation to this case for several years now.

She also said that some witnesses had been intimidated, while some went missing, including Pol Lt-Colonel Ngern Thongsuk, who disappeared after he was released on bail by the Court of Appeals.

Angkhana also said she wants to exercise her right to change investigators, as she was not confident in their ability. She also rejected as groundless reports that the investigation file of her husband's case had gone missing.

She said she would mark the anniversary of her husband's disappearance by standing at the point where he is believed to have been abducted from 11 years ago.

"The team has not made any progress since it carried out the investigation ten years ago."

That sounds like a well-planned failure. Muslim human rights don't seem to have a high priority.

I don't think you can make a racism issue out of this.

It's simple state corruption. If the Police or government don't want anything done then nothing happens. Just look at the track record of the BIB during the protests. Even when the suspects were in full view and committed the crime in broad daylight, they never arrested a single one. Yet the 'popcorn' shooter guard was arrested almost immediately.

This guy obviously threatened the income or liberty of someone well connected.
