Real estate heir Durst could face death penalty in murder
By JANET MCCONNAUGHEY and BRIAN MELLEY

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Los Angeles prosecutors have filed a murder charge against real estate heir Robert Durst that could carry the death penalty.

Prosecutors said Durst was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the killing of his friend, Susan Berman.

Durst was arrested in New Orleans over the weekend on a murder warrant and waived extradition to return to Los Angeles to face the charges.

Berman had acted as Durst's spokeswoman after his wife disappeared in 1982.

She was shot in the back of the head in her Los Angeles home in December 2000 just before New York authorities planned to interview her about Kathleen Durst's disappearance.

Prosecutors say Durst would be eligible for execution under special circumstances alleging murder of a witness and lying in wait with use of a gun. They will make that decision later.

Millionaire murder suspect booked on arms charges in La.
By JANET MCCONNAUGHEY and BRIAN MELLEY

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana State Police trooper says millionaire Robert Durst has been booked on weapons charges in that state — on top of a first-degree murder charge lodged by Los Angeles authorities.

Trooper Melissa Matey told The Associated Press that an arrest warrant was issued for Durst and he was rebooked in the Orleans Parish Jail on Monday under two new charges. They are: convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance. Matey said the controlled substance was a small amount of marijuana.

Matey said she does not know whether Louisiana prosecutors will try to keep him in the state on those charges before he is sent to Los Angeles.

Seems to have shot himself in the foot, along with allegedly killing others.

Confronted with new evidence by the makers of a documentary about his links to three killings, the troubled millionaire blinked, burped oddly, pulled his ear and briefly put his head in his hands before denying he was the killer.

Then he stepped away from the tense interview and went to the bathroom, still wearing the live microphone that recorded what he said next.

"There it is. You're caught!" Durst whispered before the sound of running water is heard. "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."

That moment didn't just make for a captivating finale to a six-part documentary on the eccentric life of an heir to a New York real estate fortune.

This guy is quite a specimen. In footage I saw shortly after one of his arrests, he is led past a camera, in handcuffs. He looks at the camera without hostility, or arrogance, and seemingly with no emotion. He looks like a lizard sizing up the cameraman for suitability as a meal. If not for this hbo special, he might never have faced justice, because of the wealth and power of his family.

"like a lizard sizing up the cameraman for suitability as a meal."

Very good description of a psychopaths outlook.
