The work camp which encroached on public land was said to be 300 metres in length.

PHUKET: -- A team from the Royal Thai Navy Third Naval Area Command carried out a raid on a worker̕s camp near Tritrang Beach yesterday (March 16) and have ordered that all buildings at the camp be demolished in 15 days.

At 2:30pm yestreday the team, led by Deputy Commissioner, Admiral Somphop Kamkana went to investigate the illegal construction of a Burmese work camp behind the construction site of a new resort on Patong-Tritrang Rd.

Local residents had complained that the camp was on public land and blocking the road.

When they team raided the camp they found 30 shelters had been built on the hill and on the road. The camp covered an area which was about 3.5 metres and almost 300 metre long.

Navy officers asked to see the worker̕s boss who was told of the resident̕s complaints and advised that the camp encroached public land and must be demolished completely, including a fence behind the site, within 15 days.

The foreman told navy officers rgar he had just recently learnt that the area encroached public land.

“Previously I built this place as a temporary shelter for labourers because most of the labourers lived in Thalang and thad to commute back and forth to work. This became an obstacle so we built this place without realising it is public land area,” said the foreman.

The foreman told navy officers that he will demolish the work camp, clear the road and return the land to the public within 15 days.

Nay officers took a record of all the information and will return to the site again in 15 days to see if site remains. If it does legal action will be taken.
