LG (TV assembly) Leaving Thailand

Featured Replies

Pardon the title goof, fat fingered the Enter key by mistake...... LG (television assembly) Leaving Thailand.

Didn't see this on front page or ThaiTech, thought it was good info if it means LG Televisions would be hit with import tax in the near future (not sure if ASEAN/AEC changes anything).

BANGKOK (Reuters) -

Next month the last batch of televisions will roll off the production line at LG Electronics' plant in Thailand's Rayong province, just east of Bangkok. The company said on Tuesday that it's moving production 1,500 kilometers northeast to the Vietnamese coastal city of Hai Phong, where labor costs are cheaper and China-based suppliers that much closer.

Sad news, as it most likely means the new 2015 range will now be 20% more expensive :(

Ahh, so that's why my LG 42" LCD only cost only B12,500 2 years ago. Great TV, never a problem. Purchased at "Power Mall", Emporium.

Oh and I thought general happiness claimed that companies all over the world ar jumping up and down to be allowed to invest in Thailand manufacturing.

By the way my Samsung fridge, which was replaced under warranty for the second time today, had a nice print " made in China" on the box

The start of the exodus. Manufaccturing in Thailand utilises a lot of old technology. LG is closing Rayong TV assembly and Indonesia also. In Vietnam they're installing the latest technology to make their current and future TVs with a labour force that is better skilled and less expensive than Thailand.

Samsung are already in Hanoi and building a second plant in HCMC.

Thailand's days as a manufacturer are coming ti and end in the same manner as the technology being used and the products produced show their age.

Vietnam offers a host of benefits to investors that Thailand can't compete with including faster transport times from component manufacturers in China and to international markets except Europe.

Expect to see others following in the not distant future as their product life cycles and manufacturing technology ages.

The time lost due to the Democrats, Suthep and his mob and the Constitutional Court in delaying the plans for the north-south and east-west high speed rail lines and the incumbants dithering on the same topic is coming home to roost.

What has rail lines have to do with tv technology?

Not every manufacturer transports their products, from one end of the country to the other, in the back of a Navara for obvious reasons.biggrin.png

What has rail lines have to do with tv technology?

oh dear., transport, infrastructure, movement, business needs of Companies !

Exactly, nothing to do with taxes or lower paid workforce

I've got a 2013 model 47" and a 2014 model 47". Nice TVs with lots of features.

If prices of LG goes up, they'll lose marketshare to Samsung.

Maybe you should inform the Japanese and BMW auto plants in Thailand that they are on the wrong track.

Since Toyota is moving part of their production to Indonesia and Phillipines, I guess they are aware already

  • 2 weeks later...

Moving to Indonesia and the Philippines, sort if disproves the need for a high speed train, but proves the need for higher quality and cheaper labour.
