Tropical storm warning

BANGKOK: -- The Meteorological Department issued latest announcement Saturday warning of tropical storms in several parts of the country from today after approaching cold spell has blanketed the upper northeast region, and is moving further to cover other parts.

It forecast torrential rainstorms and expected hails to hit the North, Northeast, Central and East during March 21-26.

It said the approaching cold high pressure from China coincided with the covering of the North by the westerly wind from Myanmar.

This will result in torrential storms and hails in areas covered by the high pressure wind and temperature could drop by 6-8 degrees, it said.

It warned people to stay off huge sign boards, big trees or unsecured structures for safety.

Labor Ministry signs an MOU developing career agency for veterans

BANGKOK, 21 Mar 2015, (NNT) - The Ministry of Labor has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the War Veteran Organization of Thailand Under Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King to establish a career development center for Thai war veterans.

According to Minister of Labor General Surasak Kanchanarat, the MOU aims at improving labor skills for decommissioned veterans, enabling them to support themselves and ultimately closing social gaps among the citizens.

According to him, former soldiers will make good and well-disciplined workers, who once undergo necessary training would have potential as skilled labors, which are currently in great demand by all sectors.

The career development center will also give training to family members of veteran military officers, the minister said. Initially, the center aims to train 400 veterans in the South and their family members.

'Bach in the Subways' concerts held at MRT station

28 provinces nationwide declared "drought disaster zones"

BANGKOK, 21 March 2015 (NNT) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has summarized that a total of twenty eight provinces nationwide have already been declared ‘drought disaster zones’.

DDPM Director-General Chatchai Phromlert says that urgent assistance is being provided to those provinces which include ten in the North, eight in the Northeast, six in the central region, and two each in the East and the South. The disaster has already affected nearly 7,000 villages in 774 subdistricts.

The Interior Ministry is stepping up assistance for the drought-hit people with the help in terms of personnel and equipment from the armed forces. The assistance mostly involves water distribution for consuming purposes, followed by water for agricultural purposes. In parallel, new weirs are being built and shallow rivers and canals are dredged to enable them to store more water.
