NACC wants additional graft charges
NATTAPHAT PROMKAEW

BANGKOK: -- THE National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has set an April deadline for the filing of additional legal complaints with prosecutors against more than 100 companies, alleging corruption related to the rice-pledging scheme.

The move came after the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders on Thursday ordered former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra to stand trial on May 19 on charges of negligence for allegedly failing to stop corruption and mismanagement of her elected government's costly rice-subsidy programme.

Meanwhile, an NACC member suggested that Yingluck should appear in court in person to listen to the indictment against her.

NACC member Vicha Makakhun said yesterday they had ordered officers to accelerate the probe into some companies related to a corruption case tied to a government-to-government rice deal. He said these additional cases would be combined with that against former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom and others - on charges of committing and supporting malfeasance in violation of the Criminal Code and competitive-bidding and anti-corruption laws.

Boonsong and 20 others will face life sentences and total fines of Bt35 billion if convicted of corruption charges, according to the Supreme Court. The G2G rice deals concern the release of about Bt5 billion tonnes of rice from September 8, 2011, to February 22, 2013.

The unelected but honest government has spent the last ten months following the money trail and surely they have enough to keep the courts very busy for a long time, hence the rolling of the cases against these hundred companies into the case with former Commerce Minister Boonsong and the twenty defendants from the government. Otherwise, there won't be enough judges.

Are you equating General Prayuth to Conan the Barbarian ? Very interesting comparison ! I am not so sure that Prayuth , even in his worst moments of 'slip-tongue", would say that his purpose is to "crush" his "enemies".

The NACC have been investigating this a lot longer than 10 months, in fact since December 2012 when the Dems first took the evidence they had presented at the no confidence debate (they were laughed at by PT)

As for companies involved, there seems to be one in particular whose name comes up in every rotten deal right back from the time of Thaksin pledging scheme :

Winners And Losers Emerge In Rice Scheme: Thailand

The government's rice-price pledging policy has paved the way for Siam Indiga to become the country's biggest exporter, with total export volume reaching 480,000 tonnes during the first nine months of this year.

Name and shame the owners of those companies!! Even if they happen to be yellow aka "good people".

If they really want to fight corruption, there can be no exceptions!!

Good. Bring it on. Corruption in any form, by who ever, must be punished.

"against more than 100 companies, alleging corruption related to the rice-pledging scheme"

Go for it, no matter who was involved, or the 'side' they're supposed to be on !

And try to recover some of the lost money. while you're at it ! thumbsup.gif

Agreed ... no exceptions to be allowed 'in the interests of reconciliation', or whatever other threats may emerge. wink.png

It was clear to see with ample of evidences that it was a collusions of many entities, from the

high up in office to the lowly rice storage guards... everybody had their hands in them rice

sacks... and if there are enough books of law in this country, they all should be thrown at those

people, starting with the ex. PM..

What evidence? Please direct me to the repository of this evidence.

And, before you go off on a tangent of claiming there was corruption, I am not questioning the allegation. I expect that there was, as this is Asia and corruption is endemic. However, I ask that you point me to where this "ample evidence" is.

My point here is that there has been no transparency in these claims. Everything has been done behind closed doors. Justice must be seen to be done. So far, we have heard multiple accusations, many damning claims, but no real evidence has been published. This is why I believe a full public inquiry was required. All we have are politically motivated allegations of malfeasance with companies and people accused but nothing much offered to substantiate the accusations. The shortfalls used to support the claims have been a characteristic of the rice business in Thailand since inception. If companies and people are guilty, I hope they get nailed, Until then, one would hope due process was respected.

Look at the starting date 8 September 2011. At this stage there was no PTP rice scheme in place. PTP only took office after 15 August 2011. The officials that was handling rice sales at that stage was still appointed by the Democrats. Corruption is systemic in Thailand and the worst offenders are the civil servants not the politicians.

Maybe "crush" the "Thai people's" enemies might be a bit more accurate - Prayut doesn't have enemies only sore losers that were rumbled for their wrongdoings!!!

"Unelected but honest government"

I had a great laugh at that one and didn't bother to read any further.
