BANGKOK: -- Effort to bring stranded Thai fishermen in Ambon Island of Indonesia is underway with the Thai Foreign Ministry yesterday inviting the Indonesian ambassador for discussion and coordination.

The Foreign Ministry’s deputy permanent secretary Suvat Chirapant met Indonesian ambassador Lutfi Rauf at the ministry to seek coordination in helping the stranded Thai fishermen, particularly on Ambon Island.

The meeting was part of the ministry’s effort to help the stranded fishermen back homes.

Since October last year the ministry and the Indonesian embassy have helped 146 fishermen back homes, 70 of them from Ambon Island.

The Foreign Ministry is working closely with the Social Development and Human Security Ministry to bring back stranded fishermen.

A special task force team will fly to Ambon Island to investigate, verify and separate Thai workers falling victims to human trafficking so as to help them return homes.

The team, led by assistant commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, and comprised of representatives from several government agencies which included the Departments of Special Investigation, Labour and Social Welfare, Immigration Division, Harbour will leave for Indonesia on March 27.
