Thai fishermen trapped on Ambon Island return home

BANGKOK, 28 March 2015 (NNT) – The government has successfully brought home 21 Thai fishery workers who were abused by human traffickers on Ambon Island of Indonesia while assuring that help is underway for other groups of victims.

After having been lured to work on fishing boats and fallen prey to human traffickers on Ambon Island, the 21 fishermen of Thai nationality safely arrived at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok Friday night. Among those giving a warm welcome to the group at the airport were officials from various agencies involved in the rescue, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, as well as families and friends.

According to the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, the workers have been escorted to a shelter in Pathum Thani for initial protection and questioning. Information provided by them will be useful in the effort to prosecute individuals or groups responsible for abusing them. Compensation and assistance will also be given to all 21 workers and their families as a follow-up to the rescue mission.

Mr Sek Wannamethi, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson and Director-General of the Information Department, revealed that authorities in Thailand have been in close coordination with the Thai Embassy in Jakarta in order to reach out to Thai workers trapped on remote Indonesian islands. He revealed that six more workers are set to come home on April 1 while five more on Bejina Island are undergoing immigration checks and their return is expected within two weeks.

Its a great day for the people of Thailand's slave trading. Who found these people and exposed them? Not the junta that's for sure. They are too busy trying to say they have no problems with any of this. Instead of a black mark Id call this a wad of black tar on their foreheads. :)

what's their story?

Good news all over.

The credit goes to Channel 3 New, not your beloved general. It was freedom of the press and free speech that lead to their rescue. Something you and the good general do not stand for.

The anti everything types will always find some way of bashing even with good news.

These 21 now make it 169 Thai fishermen that have been brought back from those islands since last October, with many more to come.

Not an easy thing to accomplish as it involves interaction with another country whose territory they are on. And as most probably no longer have identity papers it has to be ascertained that they are Thai.

Tell ya what this is easy to understand....but for the Thailand fishermen slave masters abandoning and imprisoning these poor people in foreign countries we wouldnt be having this conversation right now. This is a prime example of the status of human rights abuses this country is capable of. Hows that proving your ridiculous as post being nonsense?

And this black junta leader thinks Thailand didnt deserve the downgrading it got? Actually I wouldnt be surprised if it gets even further downgraded. At the very least they will stay right where they belong close to the bottom of the list!
