Cambodia’s Techo International Airport has been named one of the world’s most beautiful airports in 2026, a recognition that places Phnom Penh’s new gateway alongside some of the most striking terminals worldwide. The accolade was announced on 15 June by Prix Versailles, the international architecture award that celebrates projects blending culture, heritage and sustainability. The airport, located 20 kilometres south of the capital, was described as a “symbol of renewal” reflecting permanence and stability, with its name recalling a royal title granted to Khmer heroes centuries ago. Designed by Foster + Partners, the terminal combines modern engineering with traditional Cambodian motifs. A sweeping roof canopy shortens walking distances and simplifies navigation, while its undulating central rise echoes the grandeur of palaces and temples. Inside, ceilings inspired by bamboo basket weaving reduce reliance on artificial lighting and ventilation, while rumduol trees — Cambodia’s national flower — grow within the building’s central void. The airport spans more than 2,600 hectares across Kandal and Takeo provinces. Officially inaugurated in October 2025 and operational since September, it is classified as a 4F‑level facility, capable of handling the world’s largest aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. Techo International Airport joins Guangzhou Baiyun, Frankfurt, Navi Mumbai, and San Diego among the seven projects honoured this year. Three will later receive World Titles for interior or exterior design. The awards highlight a shift in airport architecture towards creating more harmonious passenger experiences. The recognition follows another milestone: Techo was ranked fifth globally among new airport terminals in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards. For Cambodia, the twin honours mark not only a leap in infrastructure but also a statement of national pride, positioning the country’s newest hub as a showcase of heritage and modernity. -2026-06-17
