Thailand’s Prayut Chan-o-cha Meets With Russian Prime Minister

Featured Replies

Thailand aims to make new ties in a meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister of Russia. Prayut Chan-o-cha met with Dmitry on Wednesday. Prayut states that Dmitry is an old friend and that they had a very important meeting.

The goal of the meeting was to help Thailand gain leverage against the West.

Thailand recently met with Chinese authorities where an exercise took place demonstrating Chinese weapons. Thailand is in talks with the country to purchase submarines and possibly acquire much-needed weapons.

The meeting with the Russians also dealt with Russian arms. Prayut stated that Thailand is interested in buying Russian weaponry.

Thailand and the United States were allies for many years before the recent coup. This stopped Thailand from working with Russia and China. Now that diplomatic ties are weakening among the two countries, this has allowed Russia and China to fill the void. Thailand was the only US ally in Southeast Asia.

Analysts argue that any deals with Russia and China will be short-term. It is expected that once the Thailand government goes back to civilian rule, the United States will return as an ally. Analysts also stress that Thailand’s current government must remain diligent and not risk the friendship the country has with the United States.

I doubt there is something like "friendship" between countries....

Much needed weapons?

To keep the populace in hand?

Putin... "Well done Thailand. Have I got an Oscar Class 2 sub for you. I'll let you have it at a fire sale price."

No... It's more like ego. We have subs and Laos and Cambodia don't. Laos by the way is landlocked.

Vietnam and Indonesia both have a number of submarines. Vietnam just purchased a shallow water operating sub of the Kilo class. I think Malaysia and Singapore have subs too. I wonder what they want with them?

We all know Singapore never makes a mistake. Right?
