Songkran Festival is celebrated in a traditional New Year's Day from April 13 to 15, with the splashing water with elephants on April 15, 2011 in Bangkok.

Songkran fairs will be held in 16 major provinces this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is focusing on the cultural uniqueness of each of the respective provinces. The goal is to bolster the government’s cultural promotion policy while making each fair unique. This will further help boost the country’s tourism.

The TAT’s Deputy Governor Juthaporn Remgronasa states that there will be fairs in 20 locations spread among the 16 provinces. The fair will be held in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket and several other major provinces.

Starting on April 11th, the festivities will be broken down into two parts. The first will be aligned with the Discover Thainess campaign and will focus on traditional celebrations. Local, cultural identity will also be a major focus.

The second part will include water splashing activities in 8 areas, including the famous moat in Chiang Mai, Patong Beach in Phuket, Silom Road in Bangkok, and several other locations.

It is expected that there will be 2.63 million people that will head to the festival. Nearly 500,000 foreigners are expected to join in on the activities. This is up 39% from the previous year. The TAT expects the festival to bring in 14.5 billion in revenue.
