Surat Thani: – A car bomb exploded last night at a shopping mall in Samui, inflicting injuries to six people and causing damages to about 10 cars, provincial governor Chatpong Chatphuti said.

The incident happened in the underground parking lot of Central Samui Festival, Chatpong said. The shopping mall was still opened at the time of explosion around 10.30 pm.

Injured victims are shopping customers who have admitted for treatments of shrapnel wounds at two hospitals on the resort island.

Initial checks indicated that the car bomb was assembled in a stolen vehicle with fake license plate number.

Police, the bomb squat and the crime scene investigators are scheduled today to conduct the full checks at the scene.

At the time close to the car bomb explosion, there was a separate fire at the warehouse of Surat Thani Cooperative in Mueang district, Chatpong said.

The authorities have noted the curious coincidence of the two incidents but have not drawn any conclusion about the linkage.

Fire fighters took about an hour to put out the warehouse blaze. They managed to contain the warehouse fire not to spread to a nearby store and food court.

The fire caused total destruction of the warehouse and consumer goods stored inside. There was no casualty report. The fire took place after the closing hour. And staff had left.

Witnesses said they heard two loud explosions before the eruption of fire. They said the noise might have come from faulty transformers.

The authorities will investigate the cause of fire at daybreak.

In another development, a fire broke out at a local convenience store in Phang Nga’s Takua Thung district, causing damages to the store and three nearby shophouses.

The district authorities said the fire started on the second floor of the store where supplies were kept.

Police are investigating the cause of fire.

the Bangkok paper had a photo of the truck. not much left except the frame and the motor. Not surprising these days as the truck bodies are often aluminum

looks to me like it was a pickup, none are made from aluminum in Thailand.

The locals buses look like they are made out of bacofoil!

OK so it is on an island unless the pickup was stolen on the island and the bomb assembled there it must have gone over on a ferry so there will be CCTV footage and records, not only of when it was transported but who was with it.

Get stuck in cops and army and find the A-holes who did this and their motivation pronto.

i live in Surat Thani and i say since years that the unrest in the deep South could outspread to other Provinces.

Last night around 10.p.m.:

- a Car bomb on Samuis Chaweng Central Festival, (The car was stolen in the deep South, what i heard)

- a huge fire in the area of Coop Shopping Centre in Phun Phin (very close to the Airport)

- Another fire on a store on Ko Phang Ngan.

All on nearly same time and at the begin of Thai Songkran.

Coincidence? I hope so...

These COULD just be unrelated accidents or non-politically motivated attacks, but they could also be bad news.

If they are political, the big question is: were they done by Muslims or Redshirts? On one hand, car bombs and fires are consistent with the MO of the southern insurgents, on the other hand, the bomb went off at 10:30pm, when there would be few people around. Bombs with a greater psychological impact and a low number of casualties is typical of Redshirt attacks. Of course, it could also just be a leaky CNG tank exploding. Did any check to see if it was an NGV car?

We shall see what happens. Given the well-known corruption and incompetence of the Koh Samui police force, we may never find out what really happened.

Well that was predicted in my earlier post before the news broke.. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/816232-thai-tourism-boom-time-for-hotels-airlines/?p=9292545

It was the anniversary of the terrorist uprising on the 10th of April and the UDD were not allowed to hold a ceremony. Jatuporn (the accused terrorist) was going to lead that ceremony. Everyone knows what Jatuporn is synonymous with.

Lets hope it was a CNG tank exploding accidentally and that the fire was electrical wiring short circuiting.

Lets pray that the 7%'ers are not making the majority live in fear again.

SuratThani is a stronghold of the Yellow Shirts and Democrat Party. But, im quite shure this has absolute nothing to do with Red Shirts,

some leaders comes from the Upper South.

I afraid that it could be an outspread from the Deep South or maybe, 'just" Provincial Mafia.

It just happened on the 5 years anniversary of the 2010 crackdown on the reds in BKK.

Coincidence, don't believe so.

Nattawut Saikua comes from Nakhon Si Thammerat....but not very popular there.

"there was a separate fire at the warehouse of Surat Thani Cooperative in Mueang district"

What a coincidence that this warehouse was founded by Suthep from the PDRC. The arch enemy of the UDD and PTP.

Only a coincidence of course. Also a coincidence it happened around the same time of the car bomb.

Forget the Paranoia Red Shirt nonsense.

Did you ever have heard about the Co-op Corporation Scandal about 13 years ago which has big 'clean' names of the Democrat Party involved?

I go shopping there every week, until today...

Again, i really fear about increase of the deep Southern problem.
Since Decades no one is really interested to solve the problems there.

So the problems comes now maybe nearer to the people which ignore them.

I really hope im wrong
