PM wants all Songkran revellers to return home safely

BANGKOK, 15 April 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday expressed concerns over the holidaymakers who are returning from their long weekend breaks and asked authorities to strictly enforce security.


Deputy Government Spokesman Maj.Gen. Sansern Kaeokamnerd said the prime minister was concerned about traffic congestion and road accidents while people were returning from the Songkran holiday. The premier therefore instructed authorities to work efficiently and help the holidaymakers return home safely. Gen. Prayut also called on motorists to drive responsibly and be kind on the road, the deputy spokesman said.

Maj.Gen. Sansern stated further that the PM thanked administrative, police and military officers and all volunteers who had been working hard throughout Songkran.

91 road accidents during Songkran in Nakhon Ratchasima

BANGKOK, 15 April 2015 (NNT) - 91 road accidents took place in Nakhon Ratchasima during the Songkran holiday from 9-14 April 2015. The province has shifted its focus to prevention of road accidents on main inbound roads.


The province on Wednesday reported that all 91 accidents involved local people and most of them had been caused by drunk driving, speeding and unsafe lane changes. Most of them were motor bike accidents and the time of day most crashes occurred was between 4-8 PM, said the province.

Nakhon Ratchasima has instructed the districts with main inbound roads to continue implementing safety measures and operate checkpoints on roads until 19 April 2015.

From 16-19 April 2015, all districts in the province will report their road accident statistics to the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation. Passenger buses and vans will be checked to ensure that they are safe to transport holidaymakers back home.

Five teenagers arrested related to garbage bin explosion

BANGKOK: -- Police arrested five teenagers Wednesday for having allegedly put four pingpong bombs into a garbage bin in front of a house on Soi Sukhumvit 101/1.


One of the bombs exploded Tuesday, injuring three workers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sriwarah Rangsipramkul said the five admitted that the bombs belonged to them.

43 more Thai students return from Yemen

BANGKOK: -- Forty-three more Thai students returned from Yemen Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Sek Wannamethee said.


Sek said the students arrived at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Qatar Airways’ Flight QR830 at 7:35 am and Ethiopian Airlines’ Flight ET618 at 1:20 pm.

Security stepped up in Samui – Photo ID needed to enter Central Festival Car Park

KOH SAMUI: -- Since the car bomb explosion security in Koh Samui has been stepped up. Those now wishing to use the car park at Central Festival Plaza in Chaweng will only gain entry by providing photo ID. Police are strictly checking visitors on all ferry piers to Samui and are scanning every person and car coming onto and leaving the island.

Ekamai adds 700 more bus and van trips for returning holidaymakers

BANGKOK, 15 April 2015 (NNT) - The Bangkok (Ekamai) Bus Terminal has sent more than 700 passenger buses and vans per day to pick up Songkran revelers from many areas across the country.


The atmosphere at the Ekamai bus terminal on Wednesday was still bustling with people although the Songkran holiday almost ends. The bus terminal’s officers have forecast that more than 5,000 people are returning to Bangkok on 15-16 April. It has therefore decided to increase bus and van trips for them.

The bus terminal has also asked many security units, including the 2nd cavalry division and Thong Lo police station, to help ensure security at the facility.

NRC Chairman: public must be well informed before holding a referendum

BANGKOK, 15 April 2015 (NNT) - Dr. Thienchay Kiranant ,the chairman of the National Reform Council (NRC), has stressed that in order for a public referendum on the new constitution to be meaningful, the public must be well informed of its provisions.


The NRC Chairman cautioned that a poorly informed public could reject the new charter for the wrong reasons; therefore, the NRC itself must contribute to the disseminating of information about the new charter through various public forums while constantly collecting feedback from all walks of society.

He is confident that the upcoming NRC deliberation session of the first draft of the charter on Apr 20 - 26 will be conducted in a professional and constructive manner. As the designated chairman of the deliberation session, he has assured that all NRC members have been well briefed on the debate procedure and are well aware of the various topics that are to be discussed.

British tourist kills police in crash

Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan:- A speeding Benz sports car driven by a British tourist crashed into a motorcycle at U-turn in Hua Hin town, killing a border patrol policeman early Wednesday.

Pol Lt Nonthawat Thongkham, an officer on duty of Hua Hin police station, said the accident happened on the outbound Phetkasem Road at the U-turn spot in front of the Hua Hin Hospital at 2:40 am.

New cultural center in honor of HM King set up in Ratchaburi

BANGKOK, 15 April 2015 (NNT) – The provincial cultural office and Wat Khanon Buddhist temple in Ratchaburi have established the new cultural center in honor of His Majesty the King in the “Nang Yai (shadow puppet)” museum at Wat Khanon.


Ratchaburi Governor Suraphon Sawaengsak said the center was a cultural space where people in and outside the community learned about the Thai shadow puppet as well as projects by HM the King in Ratchaburi. There were demonstrations and shadow puppet shows on every Saturday and Sunday at the cultural center, said the governor.

The cultural center’s ongoing activities include an exhibition in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the occasion of her 60th birthday anniversary, demonstrations of shadow puppet making, a light and sound show of the history of shadow puppet at Wat Khanon and many cultural performances.
