Half of resorts on Koh Tao face eviction

Thaivisa News

Do government departments talk to each other? Just think of the ramifications of these closures. Tourism down, unemployment up, workers from other countries no longer have valid work permits, ferry companies lose revenue etc. Presumably perpetrators will also face heavy fine or imprisonment adding to state costs! I'm not against action but think plans need to be worked out carefully between relevant departments

Just think of the lives saved by these closures. Who gives a crap about the rest. It's about time someone took action instead of pussy-footing around these illegal land owners raking in money off the backs of public land.

Well, with poor to no waste water management, a growing trash problem and an absolute BOOM in Diving tourism and related Dive schools over the last 10 yrs (400,000 visitors to Koh Tao this year) Thailand is facing a massive conservation challenge to preserve this natural treasure. If the sensitive coral reef is to be saved they're going to need to address uncontrolled growth as well as irresponsible diving. It is my belief that the current situation is 100% unsustainable the way it stands today. Great new video on the negative effects inexperienced divers can have on Koh Tao reefs here: "Diver Impacts - The Unspoken Threat to Coral Reefs" https://player.vimeo.com/video/124386121

They dont have any unspoiled coral reefs left

Which half?

The half owned by one family or the others?

Don't worry, the time has come for all of them to pay what is due for a long time.

Give some credit to this government for their efforts to clear this country from these verminthumbsup.gif

Costas, could you give us an example in which the government has succeeded so far.

Can you give us an example in which the ptp and trt governments ever succeeded ? (except int filling their own pockets)

Barely 10 per cent of buildings and plots have legal sanctions while most resorts do not have proper land lease agreements, department director general Chakkrit Parapanthakul said.

In regard to settlers who encroached on the banned zone, he said he would consult relevant agencies before deciding whether to evict them.

Certain resorts were built on plots banned for public places.

The cost of "illegally" leasing Koh Tao plots soared to about 30 million baht per rai despite the lack of land ownership documents.
If all of this is true then why aren't these criminals brought to justice. Milky their wallets illegally for many many years is still a crime in Thailand and I could swear i read that the Gov is taking land encroachment seriously now and convicting offenders without prejudice. Seems like a lot of prejudice is going to have there in Khao Tao with them picking and choosing which land encroachment offender will lose their hotel. I think a lot of milk money is going to be spread their to the right officials and this will all be forgotten or re-designated so the hotels can continue to milk money from tourists at the govs expense

You are probably right about the damage being done with little regard to conservation. It is Thai tradition to take something pure and beautiful and exploit it as much as possible until it is no longer recognizable. Unfortunately Thais have no idea and cannot grasp the term "conservation", instead they prefer to use it to make as much money as possible ... then once it is gone or ruined they will stand back and say "what happened?"

30 baht healthcare?

The BP website reports that a survey by TripAdvisor places 5 Thai islands in Asia's top 10 with Koh Tau the leading one in LoS.

Will powerful vested interests win out now as changing the island might affect tourist revenue ?

30 baht healthcare?

Err, no.

That just filled the hospital waiting rooms with people suffering with little more than paper cuts, and cost 50 Baht per person to administer.

The Libs made it free, still the same number of patients, but it didn't spend as much tax money.

heavy fines and seizing land doesn't cause costs.

More important is to destroy these mafia structures. One family rules Koh Tao like it would be their little kingdom.

Not trying to be controversial, but I'm soooooo happy with the sidewalks in Bangkok now. Lower Suk, during the day, has 1% of the vendors it did a year ago. Absolutely fantastic.

Just on the off chance, you are not trying to be funny: ...and THAT is, why they needed a coup, martial law, article 44 and attitude adjustments for?

So you cannot give an example. Thanks for that confirmation that they make promises but have not delivered.

Why are crypto fascist loonies allowed to call Thai people vermin just because they are loso business operators not the self promoting , generationaly entitled hiso gangster elite? If Costa holds the lower classes of Thailand and their leaders in such contempt why doesn't he just go back to his Greek island of Tossoff and campaign for a new Greek fascist Junta?

Island people always resent mainland people. They are not mafia they are just not part of the Hiso Thai priveliged elite so they are criminalised by whom? The power elite and their failed farang. The so called island mafia are the real people. and they, for decades gave us the fun to break out of our chains. .no wonder the farang neo nazi freaks hate a free island community. Why don't you all go home and persecute your own people?

sure lets have an election and get the very people that are behind all these illegal scams back in office so they can hide it from public view and intimidate anyone that doesn't like it with their mafia terrorist wing the redshirts and get rich while the rest of the country is in ruins.

Bull feathers! Horse hockey! Suthep's son has scads of encroached land on Ko Samui, it is said by many Thais. No investigations there........why?

Take three guesses, and the first two don't count.

The businesses you smear as Mafia are mainly linked to indigenous local island families but if the murderers from the north are sent in they will not find it so easy as there bouts of mass murder in the capital. BTW: These families have done more to put Thailand on the international tourist map than TAT or the beloved Junta.

The 'mafia terrorist wing' you refer to are the Thai electorate. The people of Thailand who voted for their elected leadership. Their chosen leadership. You calling them silly names does not change that fact. If they are a mafia they are a pretty big gang ranging from 15 million to 25 million. They are called adult voters: We have them in Europe too. If military coups made any contribution to stability, wealth, order and democracy then just one Coup d'etat would have been enough. If they work so well why have a dozen coups? Because they do not work to bring order or happiness or wealth or the rule of law. They just bring corruption and oppression and fear. Edited by The manic

yes the family who can decide that the one family members don't need to make the DNA test (if you remember)...well done for Thailand.

Lease out land that is in nation parks, or at least isn't owned by them for 30 Million per rai without paying tax for it, well done for Thailand.

Threaten to kill officials that complain that the corals will die from the waste water that goes into the sea without treatment: well done for Thailand.

And the "indigenous local families" sound so harmonic like the share to have a good live. That is not the case a few people get super rich, by leasing out the land to foreigner while the rest gets nothing.
