Thursday night, 14 nationals returned to Thailand aboard military transport flights. Since the earthquake struck, there has been 83 Thais that have returned to the country safely. An Air Force C-130 plane arrived in Thailand yesterday carrying seven people. One of the passengers on the plane was a citizen of Nepal. Thailand has been briefed on the situation in Nepal and states that the country is in need of drinking water, tents and blankets. The efforts in Nepal have changed from rescue and recovery to relief since the quake struck nearly a week ago. The Thai military has been advised to use the experience learned from the floods in Thailand in 2011 to help with the search and relief efforts in Nepal. Thai nationals that have donated money to relief efforts are to remain diligent. Anupong Pao-chinda, the Interior Minister, states that many scams have been reported in the country. Any donations that Thai citizens make should be verified and bank accounts should be authenticated before money is transferred. The Royal Thai Police will soon be taking donations to help with the Nepal disaster and will be opening up verified bank accounts soon. -- 2015-05-03 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

55Jay Posted May 3, 2015 Share Posted May 3, 2015 (edited) Indeed. Hard to avoid being cynical when "verified bank accounts" is in the same sentence as "Royal Thai Police" and "Donations". The amount of money and supplies leaving the country, and that being poured into buddhist temples, is staggering when you consider folks still live on dirt floors here, and farmers kill themselves out of despair. Fiddlesticks Posted May 3, 2015 Share Posted May 3, 2015 Most of the Thais that are fleeing Nepal were there trying to get jobs as sherpas but were experiencing difficulty getting hired. Many found that their motorcycles were getting stuck in the glacial snow especially when they tried to carry 4 additional climbers on the back of the motorcycle.
