The wastewater issue at Surin Beach has been a matter of discussion for several years.

PHUKET: -- Cherng Talay OrBorTor (Tambon Administration Organisation) will use part of a B300-million budget it has received to tackle wastewater at Surin Beach.

The budget is also being applied to construction of the treatment system and pipes, now well under way at Bang Tao.

Surin Beach still has a problem, though on a smaller scale than the neighbouring beach.

Kritchanat Supantakij, deputy permanent secretary of Cherng Talay OrBorTor, explained, “The waste water from Surin beachfront businesses has been draining directly into the sea for a long time. It comes mainly from the restaurants there."

At present, he explained, the restaurants and clubs along the beach -- the same businesses that are under siege from officialdom for alleged encroachment on public land -- drain waste from kitchens and toilets into an old municipal pipe, through which the waste flows to the beach.

"The chief executive [of the OrBorTor, Ma'ann Samran] had a sand barrier installed to stop the waste from going to the beach but this was breached by the continuing flow of wastewater.

"So, in the short term, we will pump the wastewater from the pipe and take it away for treatment elsewhere.

“A proper treatment system will be built and we expect it to be ready for use around January next year.

“When it is ready, wastewater will be pumped out of the pipe into a treatment lagoon. This will fix the problem permanently.”

He noted that the beachfront businesses putting waste into the pipe were the ones that had been given eviction orders in March this year, but that the legalities of eviction are still being fought in the court.

Thais do not understand, you have to invest in tourism! Long term planning is never considered. Just take the money and run.

Court battles over encroaching on public land, there either on it or not.

They should focus in on all the fecal matter if they want people to take notice. Not shots from a distance.

The problem at Surin Beach must exist at thousands of spots around Thailand. The Waste Water leakage at Krabi's Ao Nang Beach is many times worse. The Authorities did try to solve the problem several years ago by installing a treatment plant, but this quickly broke down and has never been repaired - reportedly because of funds theft - and the result is a large stagnant pool behind Golden Beach Hotel, flowing out into the Sea degrading this otherwise thriving resort.
