Bangkok:- Motorists will soon have to move at the speed of no more than 30 kilometers per hour on Share The Bike lanes in Bangkok.

“We will impose this speed limit after we finish drawing the line for Share The Bike lane,” says Suthon Arnakun, the director of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Traffic and Transportation Department.

He insists that the speed limit is necessary for the safety of road users.

He points out that researches show with the speed of no more than 30 kilometres per hour, there will be just 15-per-cent chance of road accidents causing deaths.

“At the speed of over 60 kilometres per hour, the risk of deaths jump to 85 per cent,” he points out.

Relevant authorities are now trying hard to boost the safety of cyclists after news reports show motor vehicles killed and injured many bicyclists during the past week.

According to Suthon, the Share The Bike lane will appear on 10 roads namely Ladphrao, Paholyothin, Chuam Samphan, Navamin, Naradhiwas Ratchanakharin, Charoenraj, Rajdamri, Onnut, Borommaratchachonnanee, and Charoen Nakhon.

Share the Bike lane is the wider left lane, which should then be able to conveniently accommodate bicyclists too.

“We will start first with the Borommaratchachonnanee,” Suthon says.

Bicycle trend has caught on among many Thais. More bicyclists are seen on street, particularly in groups. But as the number of cyclists increase, so does the number of road casualties involving bicycle riders.

All district offices in Bangkok now promise to boost the safety of bicycle riders in their areas, for example by installing warning signs at risky spots.

50 km/h would be OK if people really drive 50.

At 30 the cars must be slower than some bicycles which is nonsense

It's not the speed but the attitude of drivers toward cyclists and pedestrians that need to change.Presently just no respect and caution around cyclists.....

Haven't they been sharing the lane already? There should be a dedicated lane for biking and motorcyles that cars aren't allowed to use except for turning,,,,

I hope that is not paint in the bike lane?

Meaningless words and statistics as no one will stick to the limits if they can and no one will enforce them.

Another look we're doing something exercise so that's all good.

Hundreds of accidents causing non fatal injury though.

There must be a ministry of silly ideas, next to the ministry of silly walks perhaps? tongue.png

Sharing a lane is like having a no peeing section in a swimming pool, no way to keep things separate. Enforce parking violations and give bikes a lane of their own.

U can put as many signs up as u like but nobody observes them. Sukhumvit south of Thepprasit Rd in Pattaya is like a motorway. Take yr life in yr hands to make a U Turn. U correct...attitude and education are the problem

These lanes will be pefect to park the motorbike.........!!

...and for safely riding your motorcycle against the flow of traffic, forcing the cyclists out into the high speed traffic.

I have been driving these roads for 10 years and NEVER, NOT ONCE have I seen the BIB pull someone over for a moving violation. (excuse the yelling please, but the fact itself is significant.)

If road safety is to be improved here, this must change.

How many drunk drivers to they believe will follow this new speed limit?

Drunk is not the problem...it is the mental stage......

there are millions who drove home safe drunk.....Be drunk drive 30 in the city and 50 outside and everything is OK.

Drive 100 not drunk or 70 drunk in the city and people will die.

Drunk is not the problem, drunk at 130 is the problem.

Need a different approach, you visit a friend....drink 4 beers....think heck that is not good call the police, friendly officer tells you "no good" take and your car home, charge a bit above taxi. Everyone happy Police get money.....Not making a crime out of it, make a friendly opportunity out of it.
