CDC satisfied with charter suggestions, to propose referendum on election timeframe

BANGKOK, 12 May 2015 (NNT) - Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) Member Paiboon Nititawan expressed his satisfaction with the current charter drafting process. He was confident that the second draft would be very different from the first and will prove to be agreeable to all parties.

He denied the possibility that the provisions would be reduced from 315 to only 100. Mr. Paiboon reasoned that the CDC wants to create a constitution that is as comprehensive as possible.

The CDC member spoke on recent discussion to amend section 308 of the current interim constitution. The CDC has been in talks with the National Reform Council to submit an amendment proposal regarding the timeframe for new elections.

The proposal would introduce a public referendum on whether the country should postpone the elections by two years after the passing of the new constitution, in order to maintain current reform projects.

Mr Paiboon said that amending the section would give the public freedom to decide on an election date. It would also be an opportunity for the public to assess government work and whether to place its confidence in the current administration for another two years.
