Baby shark chokes and flops for amusement of tourists

PHUKET: -- Photos of super-excited Thai tourists ignorant enough to pet a baby shark pulled from the waters of Koh Phi Phi has enraged the online community this week after a marine activist helped spread the word.

Phuket Town 'running short of water'

PHUKET: -- After months of the Phuket Water Authority denying that the island is getting short of water, and despite recent rain, Phuket City Municipality yesterday (May 18) warned residents of the town that fresh water supplies are running short.

303 Rohingyas treated in Protection Center

BANGKOK, 19 May 2015 (NNT) – 303 Rohingya refugees caught by Thai Police in the Southern part of Thailand are now being held in the Protection Center for Human Trafficking Victims , the Protection and Career Development Center in the South of Thailand and the Child and Family Shelter Center .


According to Wichian Chaowalit, Permanent Secretary for Social Development and Human Security, the Rohingya migrants are normally separated into two groups, namely Human Trafficking victims and illegal immigrants. There are 190 Human Trafficking victims and 113 illegal migrants who were identified recently.

The Ministry and its local units are in charge of treating the Human Trafficking victims, while illegal immigrants are the Immigration's Department's responsibility. However, some of the undocumented immigrants can be placed under the care of the Centers before being sent to Immigration, he adds.

EC to prep Thais for legit election through three steps strategy

BANGKOK, 19 May 2015 (NNT) – The Election Committee (EC) has prepare three steps strategy to allow a legitimate election process to proceed in Thailand, says an EC member.


An EC member in public participation Prawit Rattanapian has revealed that the EC has joined hands with other related agencies to facilitate a democratic environment, prior to the nation's general elections through a three step strategy.

The strategy in the pre-constitution phase will promote the awareness of citizens' duties among the public, to pave way towards a democratic society, as well as preparing for the development and the amendment of laws which requires all political sides' mutual cooperation.

The second phase of the strategy concentrate on creating an understanding of democracy and the duties of the Election Commission. The third phase will promote an understanding of the election process among the public to create the consciousness of a fair an honest election.

The EC has also cooperated with the Office of the Non-formal and Informal Education to establish 7,000 democracy and election promotion centers and seminars nationwide. Public participation will play a crucial role in solving ongoing political problems.

In addition, the EC will be celebrating its 17th anniversary on 9 June 2015, where the EC will reveal the committee’s vision for the next five years to come.
