Transport Min. reviews Suvarnabhumi's 2nd Phase development plan

BANGKOK, 21 May 2015, (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport is reviewing the development plan of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, says Airport of Thailand (AOF).

According to AOT Chief Executive Officer, Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, the plan earlier drafted by the AOT and submitted to the ministry last month, needs to be revised, as the ministry deemed the multi-terminal project did not belong to the development plan; besides, an Environmental Impact Assessment is needed before it can be further forwarded to the Cabinet.

The ministry stated that both underground-related and building construction projects should be integrated into one single scheme, adding that the former should start in March 2016, and the latter in March 2017. An entire plan should be completed in 2019.

Mr. Nitinai said the construction of a second passenger building and a walkway connecting the existing passenger building to the monorail station will be included in the new project, of which the draft is expected to be completed in 3-6 months' time before being submitted to the Cabinet for approval next year. Once approved the construction is expected to be finished in 2020.

Transport Minister suspends construction of Suvarnabhumi Phase 2 expansions

BANGKOK, 21 May 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport has scrapped phase two expansions to Suvarnabhumi International Airport, which include the third runway and passenger terminal.

Transport Minister ACM Prajin Junthong has halted phase two of the airport’s construction, which is valued at 130-140 billion baht.

Airports of Thailand (AOT) PCL released a statement corroborating the delays to phase two, adding that it would finish construction in 2019.

AOT President Nitinai Sirismatthakarn revealed that the board has agreed to adjust planned airport expansions, due to suggestions by the Transport Minister in accordance with recent Cabinet resolutions.

The board has ruled in favor of postponing construction work to March 2016 and October 2017.
