This is a very subjective question depending on your life style, budget and type of books you may want to For example, read PDF magazines are better suited to a large screen tab than a small screen device, where as novels and other documents with only text and no graphics are OK for a small screen.

Inaddition do you need a SIM card for 3G access or do you want to stream youtube via a home wi-fi?

Th OP certainly picked the two opposite extremes for a device to do:

Book Reader, a task that can be accomplished with little CPU power, little memory, on an e-ink display with no backlight, and batteries that can go weeks between recharges.

YouTube/Video Media Player, a task that requires mobile-phone equivalent CPU/GPU power, a good size memory, and hi-resolution display, and eats batteries for breakfast.

Both tasks can be accomplished on mobile phones, tablets, notepads, notebooks, laptops, even iOS and Android set top boxes.

What other feature sets do you want:

Device Weight and portability (Kindle, tablet, laptop, set-top-box)?

Requires it's own built-in hi-res screen?
Battery Life?

Mobile LTE/3G and WiFi connectivity
USB external memory capability
Large Internal Memory for a couple of stored movies for long flights?

Does it need access to an "online store" for books and movies, or will you "copy" your own?

What devices have you used before (to read e-books and watch movies) and what were your impressions?

I have the Asus TF700t. With the great display it is perfect for any movie and still good for reading books. Even in sunlight.

(still I don't recommend this device because of many issues)

I like the 43% off Galaxy Tab lite

Are these genuine or cheap copies ?

Obviously hard to know by site maybe, but is it common to sell cheaper copies then the real manufacturer items ?
