IRREGULAR MIGRATION
Trafficking investigation to be completed in June

BANGKOK: -- The investigation into the trafficking of Rohingya migrants is expected to be completed in June, assistant national police chief Gen Aek Angsananont said on Monday.

He was speaking after chairing a meeting of police assigned to look into the smuggling of migrants into Thailand.

They are trying to piece together evidence in connection with the areas where the migrants were found. The sites include Tambon Padang Besar in Songkhla province, Satun, and Ranong.

The evidence obtained to date indicates that the trafficking was a transnational crime and this charge would be included in the charges already made against the suspects.

Aek added that they would try to finish the interrogations as soon as possible and that he expected the investigation to be completed in June.

Of the 77 individuals believed to have been involved in trafficking, 46 have already been detained. The 31 others remain at large.

"Interrogation of the detained 46 suspects has already taken place. The police intend charging the suspects with transnational crime in addition to the other three charges made earlier. These are human trafficking, assisting aliens to enter Thailand illegally as well as unlawfully detaining others and kidnapping them for ransom," he said.

Many of the suspects have already admitted the crimes though key suspects continue to deny the charges.

If you saw the BBC last night, I don't believe the International Community are going to accept arresting a few minor people, as closure on this. Many camps have been found close to the border in Malaysia, a border which is actively patrolled by the Army.

What a joke! In countries with a professional and skilled police force, the investigation will take as long as it takes. This is a HUGE case, and to complete in two months is impossible. Then it is clear for all that the Thai police does not want to complete the investigation. Totally unacceptable.

Absolute disgrace. Give just a month to investigate a barbaric practice that has been going on for over a decade? To sweep under the carpet the appalling events involving human beings in such a way makes me want to weep with dispair. Daily my love of Thailand which used to be so strong weakens. This is not a Land of Smiles, it's a Country that should be ashamed of itself.

Not just this case.... it seems to me like their method for running everything in the country is through a press announcement ... usually about an expected, future result. ... coffee1.gif

The investigation will be completed in June and the army will be completely exonerated.

Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, and be handsomely rewarded.

and the army will be completely exonerated.

I'm almost surprised that they didn't add that directly to the OP.... wink.png
