Assets of fugitive UFUN suspect seized
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- POLICE yesterday confiscated gold bars, ornaments and other valuables worth around Bt2 million from a bank safety deposit box that allegedly belonged to a suspect linked to the so-called UFUN pyramid scheme.

The valuables include gold, luxury watches and large amounts of cash, and belong to Weeratwit "Alex" Jaruphatphaisal, the 26th suspect in the alleged investment scheme, who is now in hiding overseas, police said.

Police acted on a tip from Weerawit's brother Thanin Kiatchalermkhun.

The safe deposit box was with a Thanachart Bank branch in Nang Lerng. Police said they also found land title deeds, but learned later that Weerawit had obtained them before he joined UFUN, so they would not be frozen.

Police had earlier confiscated a Mercedes Benz sedan worth around Bt4.1 million belonging to Dr Sujin Chawittanurak, the 27th suspect in the UFUN case. Chief investigator Pol Lt-General Suwira Songmetta said the doctor has been temporarily released on a bail guarantee of Bt500,000.

Meanwhile, popular singer Sukrit "Bee The Star" Wisetkaew will meet with police at 10am today to explain widely distributed photos of him having a meal with a senior UFUN member, Suwira said.
