webfact
Suthep to Leave Monkhood and Return to ActivismBy Khaosod EnglishAnti-government protester plant a kiss on Suthep Thaugsuban's cheek during a demonstration in Nonthaburi province, 22 April 2014SURAT THANI — The firebrand leader of the ultra-conservative protest movement that helped pave the way for the 2014 coup d'etat says he will leave the monkhood and return to activism in the near future.Suthep Thaugsuban, a veteran Democrat Party politician who became a monk after leading mass anti-government protests for six months prior to the 22 May coup, told reporters at a forest monastery in Surat Thani today that the rumors about his plan to return to secular - and political - life are true."The rumors are true," said Suthep, who is also known by his monk name as Phra Suthep Paphakaro. "I have determined that there are works in the current situation that I have to help. So I decided I will leave monkhood, but when, I have to think about it first."Suthep said he will return to "campaign on civil issues" with the Great Mass of the People Foundation, a charity founded by the leaders of the former anti-government protest campaign."The foundation will work in promoting strength and cohesiveness among the people, such as how to make people have Dharma in their heart," Suthep said. "We will promote a moral and ethical society. We will support self-sufficiency communities projects, and model communities for married, poor couples who want to live meaningful, moral, and self-reliant lives as farmers." I believe Franco and other fascist leaders had similar plans [albeit with Catholicism in their hearts}........Lets hope he stays in the monkhood. jaidam
History will not even remember his name and and hopefully one day he will be judged, in a court of law. It's Phra Paphakaro. You could try writing it down a few dozen times if you have a problem remembering his name. Here I'll start you off, Phra Paphakaro, Phra Paphakaro..... No copy and pasting, it wouldn't be as beneficial.

djjamie
Will he be able to walk around without his "ring" of safety? Depends on if 7% of the violently radicalised population that support terrorism behave themselves. For the sake of Suthep and the peaceful majority, lets hope so... GoodThaiGirl
Great news. The Mandela of the East will be back. History will judge this man very favourably as being the stepping stone to a democracy that extends past the first principle called elections. God Speed good man. Good speed. Using violence and intimidation to disrupt an election and demanding an elected government step down for unspecified reforms to be made by unnamed people--is that your idea of a stepping stone to democracy? Mandela spent decades in prison. If only that were true of Suthep. yes demanding a murdering government step down ..im fine with that ..or were you fine with chalems terrorists killing protesters .. MichaelJohn
I wonder how we can have investigations into encroachment in Korat and the North and ignore such problems in the South. I often wonder why some people are above the law and appear to be protected in some way.

No, somehow just somehow that's the conclusion they come to when their unarmed brother is lying on the footpath with blood spurting from the sniper's bullet wound in his head. Huh? Are you aware of the man's history? If anyone has an entourage of lackeys, bully boys, thugs, thieves, money grabbers and hangers on, I expect that it is Suthep, the "Don" of the south. ChrisY1
This "servant" of the elite is equally as bad and untrustworhy as any of the protected class in Thailand....right up there with the best ( read worst) of the liars and thiefs of this fine land........and should be locked away!!! But......he'll likely achieve "hero" status from the blind masses!!!
