I'm from Melbourne and will be applying for a multiple tourist at the Melb Thai Consulate, my question is do I need a return or forwarding ticket in order to have my Visa approved , I don't want to buy a return ticket yet as I'm not sure how long I will be staying , I heard rumours that you wouldn't be allowed in without return ticket being purchased first ? Is this true ?

With a visa there is no need for proof of onward travel, only when arriving without a visa do you need proof of onward travel.

Some consulates however do exist on seeing a ticket out of the country before issuing a tourist visa. I do not recall Melbourne requiring this, but you can check their website.
