Transport 'Superboard' proposed
The Nation

Umbrella body for public transport and traffic; to coordinate 11 state agencies

BANGKOK: -- A PROPOSAL is set to be submit-|ted to the government to establish |an umbrella body to regulate |public transport and traffic poli-|cies in Bangkok and around the country.

The Transport 'Superboard' will coordinate 11 government and state-enterprise agencies responsible for all means of public transport and traffic direction, according to Prof Sriracha Vongsarayankura, chairman of the Office of the Ombudsman, who is working on the proposal.

The Superboard would be chaired initially by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for the sake of unity through single-command supervision, he said. The setting up of the Superboard is a result of long delays in several projects, duplication of work, inter-agency friction, and lack of decision-making by authorities, Sriracha said.

The Superboard would also plan and permit new operations of marine public transport in rivers and small canals, while owners of certain types of vehicles would also be required to produce proof of parking spaces available to them, before annual registration is renewed. The Department of Land Transport has launched a campaign demanding proof of parking space.

Fees for motorcycle taxi service will also be regulated due to complaints that passengers are often overcharged when the service is in high demand.

A network of traffic volunteers will also be set up to help traffic police monitor dangerous driving and traffic violations.

Creating more shortcuts and links between small streets (sois) will also be a focus, while traffic police will be stricter on parking violations, and sites where hawkers are an obstacle to traffic flow, plus certain traffic regulations.

Handbooks and maps of shortcuts and soi-links will be published and distributed to motorists and new traffic and road signs erected.

Expressways of Thailand and the Department of Highways are cooperating more to try to reduce the problem of heavy traffic congestion in areas where their respective roads meet or converge.

The other eight agencies that will work with the 'Superboard' are the Marine Department; the Mass Rapid Transit Authority; the State Railway of Thailand, the Public Works and the Transportation Departments, both under Bangkok Metropolitan Administration; the Office of Transport and Traffic |Policy and Planning, the Traffic Police Division, and the Royal Thai Police.

Why another superboard?

The Junta is already the superboard for all Thai sovereignty. Just add another general to the NCPO to oversea Thai transport.

The way this government keeps expanding, there will be only two types of Thai citizens let in Thailand: soldiers and civil service employees.

That's one way to end political discourse.
