TAT to carry on with 'Must-Visit Cities' campaign next year

BANGKOK, 12 June 2015 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is aiming to expand the “Must-Visit Cities” campaign in 2016 in a bid to cover more destinations, hoping to generate more income.

Mr Anupharp Thirarath, TAT Deputy Governor for Domestic Marketing, disclosed about the TAT’s marketing plan for the year 2016, saying this year’s project branding 12 provinces as must-visit destinations will be expanded to include 12 more places located nearby. The strategy is aimed at enticing travelers to visit multiple provinces on one trip which would, in turn, extend their period of stay and increase their spending.

Based on the records of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the “Must-Visit Cities” campaign has enabled the tourism sector in each of the 12 participating provinces to grow 8.49 percent on average during the first quarter of this year. At the same time, tourism revenue in the areas also jumped 10.84 percent from the same period last year to 16.2 billion baht.

Furthermore, Mr Anupharp added that the TAT is set to launch the 3rd Dream Destination project, under which 20 provinces will be promoted as places of good fortune and auspiciousness. The new campaign is part of the effort to achieve the target income of 800 billion baht from domestic tourism set by the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

Me think Thailand would be in a heap of financial troubles had they not have such huge revenues

from the tourism industries...

Tourism is the biggest revenue earner in this country, I hope Thailand remember that when they

come to dissing and criticizing tourists....

Except it's not. Exports account for more than two thirds of GDP.

Los has a funny attitude towards tourism as when it suits it's touted as all important and must be protected.

However when something goes wrong, visitor numbers down, travel advisories issued etc they go all defensive and claim it's not that important.

But for the last 18 months tourism has accounted for almost all the increase in GDP growth rate. But being that exports account for 70% of GDP, tourism cannot alone supplant exports in revenues for Thailand to survive the current financial crisis.

Something like 6-8% was the last figure I read. Considering that Thailand before always had an annual economic increase of 4+%. It would mean that if there are zero tourists it would just need 2 years for the industry to cover that.

What I am uncertain is if these 6-8 % really covers all the beer Chang the tourists drink, all the 20.000 Baht some send every month to their tirak, all the sick buffalo money. All the money spent for buy land on the wife name. All the money spent on the local market....

I can't imagine how someone could estimate these numbers
