Trafficking suspect Manas suspended from service
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- HUMAN trafficking suspect Lt-General Manas Khongpaen has been suspended from military service, Army commander General Udomdej Sitabutr said Thursday.

Manas, a former special adviser to the Army, would be reinstated and paid retroactively if found not guilty of the various crimes with which he has been charged, said Udomdej.

Meanwhile, another Bt34 million in assets belonging to people allegedly involved in the trafficking of Rohingya and other migrants has been ordered seized, including Bt4 million found in Manas's bank accounts.

The total value of assets belonging to suspects alleged to be involved in human trafficking in the South has reached Bt109 million, said Anti Money-Laundering Office secretary-general Seehanart Prayoonrat.

The Bt34 million also involves assets seized from another key suspect Pajjuban Angchotephan, as well as Natthaphat Saengthong, Charnnarong Phromenut and Hard Thodthing.

People found to have transferred the money to these suspects and all others involved in the trafficking would have their assets seized if the evidence were strong enough, said Seehanhart.

In this case I would say no, he's been suspended properly with no pay and no rank and no benefits ... "if" he is found not guilty, then he will be reinstated and retroactively paid.

In this case his powerful connections will make sure that he's somehow white washed. Edited by MaxLee

Perhaps so ultimately, but this is the one of the first cases seen against any "military" personnel (mostly Police so far), so (with the eyes of the world on the human trafficking issue here) I suspect he might be the sacrificial lamb that ensures the investigation goes no higher.

Army commander General Udomdej Sitabutr said "if" (according to the report) ... we'll have to wait and see.

I don't think Mr Manas care too much about his official paycheck !!

"OMG,do I get a salary too??"

Remember the 40 millions that went missing from the money found in the PVC-pipes case??

The case against Manas is the SECOND case against an military officer accused of trafficking.

Article titled "Thai officials prosecuted for human trafficking," published 2015-01-30:

"BANGKOK: -- More than a dozen Thai government officials -- including senior policemen and a navy officer -- are being prosecuted for human trafficking, junta officials said Friday, as they vowed "zero tolerance" of the trade.

Songsak Saicheua, a foreign ministry official, said at least 15 police officers were facing prosecution, alongside a Royal Thai Navy officer, two local administration officials and a social worker."

Remember the Navy filed a defamation lawsuit in 2013 against two Reuter Thai reporters for allegations that the Navy is involved in human trafficking? This accused and yet unnamed royal naval officer's "disappearance" from public does not bode well for Justice being carried out by the military in the Manas case.

I thought Gen Prawit told us that Manas had made copious contributions to Thailand. These would appear to include the extrajudicial executions of the unarmed militants at the Krue Sae Mosque and the 'disappearance' of 40 million in cash from a drug bust he attended.

Anyway good to see the NCPO is willing to sacrifice one of their own, especially an ISOC member, in order to try to save Thai exports.

I didn't know about that - he seriously managed to "disappear" 40 million Baht, from a drugs raid he was on and got away with it!

I was going to ask what a two star general was doing leading a drugs raid, but on thinking about it, and the fact that 40 million was involved, I wont bother!smile.png
