What To Eat (vegetarian)?

Featured Replies

Hi!

I was wondering, what are the best vegetarian meals/dishes in Thailand?

Something that is "must" to taste while there? But please, nothing very hot/spicey...

And did I get it right; Thai food/kitchen isn't so hot/spicey as Indian kitchen?

My mouth just cant handel too spicey food :o

Hmmmm not really. They have difficulty for a variety of reasons in getting their heads around veggie food. They seem to associate eating meat with being affluent. Only the poor wouldnt eat meat - even though the quality of the meat they often use, particularly in school dinners, is of little nutritional value. Indeed - there are NO abatoirs in Phuket which have passed the government standards tests. And thats a standard in an Asian country - Jeez how bad can it be in there!!

We have the veggie festival coming up in October - thats great - just what you want mate.

Apart from that - all the food you eat out here is quite spicy - but you CAN ask for it not to be.

Yes, i m a veggie too.

why u just dont tell the woman/man who cooks for you likes "i cant eat too spicy ,please dont add chilli'??

Some V dishes that no spicy

- stirred fried mix veg.(Phad Phuk Ruam)

- sweet and sour stirred fried veg and soy protien (Phad Prew Whan Protien Kaset)

- coconut soup with galanga and mushroom (tom Kha Hed)

- spring roll stuffed with glass noodle and veg(Poe Peah phak)

- (not spicy) and sour mushroom salad ( yum hed , mai phed)

- vegetarain phad thai

- sea weed soup with cabbage

- BBK mushroom with japanese soya sauce

- soya protien stirred fried with mush room and ginger

..etc...........

I had a date with a brit V- boy ...he told me.. he can eat any Thai dish .. just telling the chef.. no meat , and not too spicy .. (maybe use soya protien or mushroom instead meat)

Protein Kaset (soya Protien meal )

You must try a very popular dish here called "SOMTUM". It is a spicey Papaya salad and is very famous here in Thailand, just ask for "mai pet" meaning not spicey. There are many variants of somtum but you can start with "Somtum Thai", very nice. If you can not eat dried prawns, just say "mai sai goong" which means don't put any prawns, enjoy.

My hosts have informed me that if you are vegan you can announce that with:

(females) di-chan kin jeh

(males) phom kin jeh

Thank you all for helping + tips!

Phom Kin jeh... now I need to learn how to pronounce that :o

As the poster said, if you are vegan use that phrase. I used to use it as it means "I eat vegetables" so they wont put egg or any animal product in it. Cool.

I had a hel_l of a time pronouncing it when i first arrived though. I dont know why.

I moved onto mai sai neua (no meat) mai sai pla (no fish) etc

Good luck

Bambina - great post !!!!! You ve made me feel hungry.

If you re in Phuket - have a look at the veg festival. You can eat just about anything with complete impunity. For 10 days only though!!
