Most probably because of a leaking roof for years.

Look up when you enter second floor in Big C extra Pattaya near Kasikorn Bank, and you will see a similar event will occur in the future.

"made no public statement"

Just to save everyone time, the above is the continuation of the story if you hit the link.

Its a multi floored shopping mall. You can see from the photo light fittings have fallen down. And its nowhere near the roof.

The cause? How about shitty construction to save money.

You can quite clearly see an escalator which travels in an upward motion. This means there is at least one more floor, plus the service floor making a leaky roof an unlikely cause.

Have been going there the last few weekends. There's a big enough construction development outside the Tops supermarket, all the floor has been dug up for a few weeks.

reminds me of being outside the kids play area in a Tesco-Lotat when a big light cover fell down from the roof onto where the kids were playing.

But, isn't it these cute little instances of Thai incompetence and stupidity that could take the life of you or your loved ones at any instant, what makes Thailand so loveable?

Yayoi, Swensons, that's outside Robinsons on the ground level.

There is a basement level below, and about 4 levels above.

A young girl was killed there last year, when going up the escalator and watching a show on below, and her head was crushed as it got jammed between upper floor and the escalator handle.

then they decided to put in hanging plastic sheets that would hit someone's head before getting to the bottom of the upper floor.

More likely drips from condensation at air-conditioning ducts.

To be honest, it does not need to be near the roof for water damage, If rain water was leaking in it could have leaked through service shafts etc, or it could even have been a water supply or drainage pipe that has been leaking and not repaired that could have softened the ceiling causing the collapse.

Wait just a darned moment.

Are we saying that the standards of construction and maintenance are not as high as Thais say they are?

There is as has been stated a lot of construction bot almost all of it has been away from this area. however, that being said with all the renovation it is not improbable that it had some affect on it.

As to the cleanliness and safety here it is one of if not the cleanest shopping mall I have been in. I live here and it is a pretty great place to go.

As to water causing it I am skeptical bu t hen again if there is an issue with some of the construction it is not out of the question. Just happy that no one was seriously hurt.

Here it appear much easier and quicker to attach fittings with nails.. [looked at a number of thing that fell down over the years, nails to hold fittings and fixtures... even seen long sections of gutter fall down] but then think of the time it would take to get a power cable, electric drill, raw plugs and screws, screw driver, when the job is done quick with a hammer.

They have battery drills in Thailand, double as screwdrivers.

If anyone here has had any experience with building in Thailand......they would understand the system used to install plaster board ceilings.....many fall down or fail......the lightweight system is useless....but used everywhere

im looking for thai "tradesmen" to build my home, i hear there are many

The local motosai taxi guys would do it.
