MSDHS Minister explains ministry's beggars and homeless regulations

BANGKOK, 22 June 2015 (NNT) – The Minister of Social Development and Human Security has detailed the ministry's efforts in solving the social issue of beggars and homelessness through a promotional campaign named ‘The Proper Ways of Giving’, urging the public to help donate.

The Minister of Social Development and Human Security Pol Gen Adul Sangsingkeo has explained the work of the ministry regarding the upcoming regulations of beggars in the Bangkok area. This is the fourth time the ministry is trying to solve the issue.

In this most recent operation, six beggars prevention and solving operation teams will be providing verification services and screening for the beggars through an ongoing operation. Beggars and the homeless will receive legal protection and mental rehabilitation services. This bout of operations is set to commence during 22-26 June 2015.

These operations have been carried out continuously three times before. Approximately 1,600 beggars have been enrolled into the rehabilitation program.

The MSDHS Minister added that all related agencies have been urged to provide an ongoing service to solve the beggars issue, through the promotion campaign named: ‘The Proper Ways of Giving’. This program encourages participation from all sectors to resolve this social issue properly.

He has also asked the public to make donations to the beggars and homeless at donation boxes placed at convenience stores, shopping centers, hospitals, temples, and particularly the 11 homeless shelters nationwide to support the rehabilitation program. These donations will be used to establish a starting fund for beggars and the homeless, allowing them to start their own careers and improve their quality of life.

On the issue of beggars, the MSHDS has established an operational center which will serve as a coordinating agency to regulate beggars. This operation center will also continue to work with other agencies to solve this matter.

"The proper way of giving"... pay 100 baht for an 80 baht lottery ticket!!

HM The Princess noted that there were a lot of homeless under Rama IV Silom flyover, outside the front door of The Thai Red Cross Society.... did they feed and clothe them? No, the Police moved them to another place!!!

The Kiwis among us will see this all as another Tui advert!! Yeah, Right!

How do you rehabilitate homeless, poor people?........

Don't need to worry, they will become the norm when the economy really hits the skids. We will all assimilate with them.

The fact is they will be the new dukes of urban Thailand, knowing the lurks and perks of the lifestyle ahead of the rest of us;)

Having worked with the homeless for many years, the government will soon begin to realise that this diverse section of the community do not respond to regulation. Many prefer the freedom of their lifestyle, many are severely damaged, all of them require understanding, tolerance, care (both in the physical and medical sense of the word) and love. It is hard to love the unwashed, but a few kind words and a smile might mean everything to the homeless beggar. Never give money to anyone begging on the street as it will likely as not be used inappropriately. Offer them food, clothing, shelter and kindness and keep persisting as these acts won't miraculously get them off the streets. If you are Buddhist, Christian, Moslem, Hindu, Sikh or any other religion, encourage your Wat, Church, Mosque or Temple to go out and meet, talk to and 'adopt' our fellow humans. There but for the grace of whoever or whatever you worship go all of us!

If we had a government of the people by the people, the need to beg would be reduced. This is the 25th largest economy on the planet, there is wealth enough for all if the rich would pay their taxes. No society has eliminated begging entirely, of course (except possibly North Korea

Yeah 25th biggest only because the population is high. GDP per capita is 94th according to the world bank. Barely making it into the top half.
