UK mobile number needed for recieving sms from my bank, paypal?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I from the UK and live in Thailand but I havent got a UK mobile number, however I need one for recieving codes from my UK bank and paypal.

I don't need to send texts and only need it to recieve sms occasionally from my UK bank and paypal etc, so maybe something 'pay as you go' or a cheap solution should be okay.

Can anyone recommend me a website with this service?

GIfGaff in the Uk. Pay as you go and sims are Free !

Do you them on your bank and paypal? Can you receive messages from short codes? I'm asking becasue I just tried one service called Twilio and it didn't work because paypal and banks typically send messages to their users with short codes and Twilio numbers cannot receive messages from a short code.

My bank's on-line form would not accept a non-UK number for the alerts and codes ...... but when I phoned the Helpdesk they managed to enter my Thai mobile number from their end. Worth a try?

I have a uk sim that I use but have to keep it alive every 6 months by making a call

I don't really want to have to use a sim card and a actual handset if poss, just an online service would do.

Buy an English phone number on Skype.

Does skype do mobile numbers?

They sell land line numbers in the UK.

Nobody can tell calls are coming from outside the UK, you can choose from a list of UK towns for the calls to appear to originate.

UK number, with UK phone code appears at the receiving end.

UK Landline numbers do receive text messages. Send a text message to the landline number, the phone rings and when you answer it the message is electronically read to you.

At least that's how it worked about 5-6 years ago. Shouldn't think the facility has been removed.

Landlines definately don't work, I've tried a few already and you can't even add them on paypal as it needs to start with 07, which no landlines do. Also I imagine a lot has changed in the last 5-6 years because thats a long time in terms of technology

I've just tried it...........Landlines definitely DO still work, at least sending to a BT number does.. GOOGLE IT!!

If PayPal don't accept inputting landline numbers that is a failing of the PayPal system NOT the text system.

I would suggest you contact PayPal and ask them why.

But when I contacted PayPal about a month ago with a query, as soon as I mentioned living in Thailand and not the UK they said I would have to close my UK account and open a new Thai account.

I use Vodafone in Australia with my bank, and once a year I top up $30 which gives me a year, I only use for the bank code.

Just found out I need one to confirm a new facebook and instagram too.

I'll email giffgaff and see if shortcodes work and how much it costs and see.

If anyone else has an idea, please let me know dudes!

Do you have a mobile phone/service here in Thailand?

If so, just enter you +66 NN XXX YYYY telephone number as every software verification/confirmation app. (Facebook, Instagram) supports short code SMS, and so does every Thai mobile provider.

That said, financial institutions may or may nor support all 4, 5 & 6 digit SC SMS, most VoIP/SMS providers may not support any/all SC SMS (some may/do: Anveo is the only one I could find in the U.S., and it is a paid service) and your financial institution may require a known, good mobile number in its native country.

You might be better off looking at support forums in your native country re: specific financial institutions and SMS requirements.

Google Voice (my number is in the U.S.A.) supports some, but not all, SC SMS, in my experience.

There are a few virtual providers, where you can receive sms on a computer - https://www.messagebird.com/en-gb/pricing is one

4 quid a month probably excessive just for banking purposes.

Personally I told my UK bank I don't have a mobile phone (they don't know I left) and they removed sms confirmation codes etc from my account - I can transfer to known accounts without any confirmation, but to add new recipients requires a branch visit...

Luckily I don't use it much - just to settle CC bills mainly. On the couple of occasions where I've had to send BACS to someone new, I just did it via a family member that was already on my account as a known recipient.

Should mention I did try adding a landline to my bank account but it was not accepted - with Paypal however I am pretty certain I have a Skype In landline number associated with the account.

What UK bank do you use?

Both Lloyds and Halifax accept my UK Skype number as my primary telephone number. If I want to add a new recipient, in either the UK or Thailand, for security it requires a phone call to me to input a four digit one time code. The call comes to me on Skype in Thailand, I input the code and it is accepted without question every time. I don't need to receive any SMS messages. Neither do I receive any paper communication. Everything comes via email and on line messaging.

Mine is Santander - just tried again

  • New mobile number: The mobile phone number you have entered is not valid. Please try again. You should enter your phone number without the first zero and without any spaces.

I did try doing it by phone, but they wouldn't/couldn't add it either.

Lloyds at least accept a Thai number. I have been using mine for a few years now and before that a Chinese one so I think they are fairly country agnostic thumbsup.gif
